Spring Blog Carnival! Welcome to the Parasol Parade! (Challenge+Give@way)

Welcome to start of the Spring Blog Carnival 2012!  This is our second year of hosting this fantastic event and while there have been a few changes I'm sure you'll have just as much fun!  This event is hosted by myself, Lori at Pure Imagination and Angela from Reading Angel.  It's similar to a blog hop but yet totally different.  The similarity is that you can win lots of goodies!  Each booth in the carnival is hosting a fantastic challenge with amazing prizes.  This event runs from May 7th-13th.
This event has ended!  We look forward to seeing you next year!

My booth is the Parasol Parade and I'm featuring all things Steampunk!

Welcome to the Parasol Parade!  Sit back and admire the gorgeous steampunk attire...
Make sure you scroll all the way to end for the challenge as well as the list of all the other booths.
(All these are taken from pinterest, credits are below the pictures.)

What you can win: Giveaway has ended
The fabulous people at Roc (Penguin) are sponsoring this giveaway.  They are giving away 5 sets of the Clockwork Empire books by Steven Harper.  This is The Doomsday Vault (my review) and The Impossible Cube (my review).  This means there will be 5 winners and each winner gets BOTH books.  Pretty awesome, right?  I LOVED these books! (Please note that I am not responsible for the shipping of these items and will not be held responsible if they do not arrive or arrive damaged.  However, please feel free to contact me if you do not receive them and I will look into the matter and do my best to assure they do arrive.)

Rules: Giveaway has ended
This is only open to US addresses.  If you are international but have someone in the US who can provide their address you are welcome to participate.  I apologize that we cannot provide shipping outside the US.
You must be 13 or older to accept these winnings.
This ends on May 13th at 11:29 EST

Challenge:Giveaway has ended
The challenge for you is one of two things.  You pick which one you would like to do.  Or you may do both and get two entries instead of the just one.

Challenge One:Giveaway has ended
The books featured for the prize are The Doomsday Vault and The Impossible Cube.  In the books inventions play a very big part.  When people in this world are infected with the Clockwork Plague they can become crazy smart and invent some insane things.  For this challenge describe something you would like to invent.  It does not have to be steampunk-like.  There are no limits.  (Meaning it doesn't have to be realistic.  It could be a time machine, a way to stop time, a flying contraption... anything.)  In  a comment do your very best to describe this item in the best detail possible.  You may also create a blog post for your entry if you would like.  Remember to leave a way to contact you in the comments!  (Email or twitter)

Challenge Two:
Because I love Steampunk fashion so much I would love to see some items YOU love that are Steampunk themed.  Post pictures on your blog or make a pinboard on pinterest and link me to it in a comment.  Please be sure to have the source listed if you post on your blog.  (If you don't have a blog or pinterest you may post on facebook as long as I can see it.)  Remember to leave a way to contact you in the comments! (Email or twitter)

How the winners are selected:Giveaway has ended
Because I want to see some effort put into the entries I will pick a winner each for the most creative invention from Challenge One and the most creative from Challenge Two.  The other 3 winners will be randomly selected from the remaining entries.  Obviously you can only win once.

Thanks so much for stopping by the Parasol Parade!  Be sure to stop by all the other fantastic booths listed below.  Or by checking out the Carnival Map which makes it even more fun because it'll feel more like a carnival!

Interview with Benedict Jacka and Give@way ENDED of FATED!

Today I'm lucky enough to have the author Benedict Jacka on the blog.  He is the author of Fated which I loved and reviewed HERE.  He was nice enough to answer some questions and the publisher is offering up one copy of Fated to one lucky person!

Thanks so much for being on my blog Benedict! Fated was such a pleasure to read and I am very eager for more of Alex!
The world you've created in the books is fascinating and I'm curious, where did you draw on your inspiration for it? (Authors often hate this question but I can't seem to stop asking it. I've gotten such great answers in the past!)

No problem - glad to be on here!

I can see why they'd hate the question - it's a hard one! For the Alex Verus series, about half of it comes from all the books, films, series, and games I've ever watched or read. The other half comes from the setting - my childhood growing up in London and the sense of the city. It's hard to put into words, but there's something about London which makes me think of stories and magic.

When it comes to Alex, do you see yourself in him at all or is he totally different from yourself?
Hmm . . . tricky one. We're probably more similar than different. I used a lot of my personality traits as a starting point for Alex's character, but they've developed in a different way since they're all filtered through his (much more violent) history. We do have the same sort of approach to solving problems, though.

What was the biggest obstacle you've had to overcome when writing?
*laughs* Getting rejected over and over again! Writing's not a job for the easily discouraged. I'm not even going to go into how many books I had rejected before Fated was published, but let's just say it was a lot!

The road to publication is definitely a long a difficult one!

Do you have a favorite character to write?
Probably Alex himself. His personality's a natural fit to mine and so it's very easy for me to figure out what he'd do in any situation. Also, I love coming up with ways for him to use his divination magic to get out of whatever overly-lethal trouble he's in this time.

Oh yes, I think I would have fun figuring that out as well!

Or a character that's particularly difficult to write?
Deleo's scenes were very hard. This is because she's insane. Since I'm not insane (as far as I know) it's tricky to put myself in her shoes. Luckily she snaps back and forth between psychotic episodes and periods of lucidity so at least she has some spaces where she's not full-on-crazy.

And I loved how she was done!  The insane pieces along with the parts where she's lucid were done very well and added a nice element to the story.  I'm sure it was difficult though!

In Fated do you have a favorite scene and if so can you give my readers a bit of a tease?
Ooh, hard to choose. Maybe Alex's final confrontation with Khazad. It's probably the darkest and the most vicious scene in the book, but it shows Alex's character really well - both his vulnerability (Khazad plays with him in a very cruel cat-and-mouse fashion) and also his dangerous side (Richard picked Alex as an apprentice for a reason).

Oh yes, that was one intense and crazy scene!  I loved it!

We're lucky enough that you have three books from the Alex Verus series coming out this year. I love that it is being done more often because quite often a year between books results in me losing interest. If it's only a few months then I'm still excited and eager for more of the world and characters. How did you get lucky enough for that happen? Did you have three books already finished when they sold, or how did it all come about?
It was actually a publishing decision by Orbit, for the reason you just described - it's a lot easier to build up momentum for a series if it's getting released at three-month intervals. I wrote the first draft of Fated all the way back in 2008. In 2009 I started to get interest from Orbit, in 2010 I rewrote it, and in the same year I was offered the contract for all three books and got to work on Cursed and Taken. Fated's been sitting waiting for publication for a long time!

Yay!  I'm so glad they are doing that more!  I love having three books that I can read closer together, I hope they do it more often!

And the three books come out this year but will there be more of Alex Verus in the future?
If I have any say in it, definitely! I'm plotting out Alex Verus #4 at the moment.

Oh good!  I'm sure that three won't be enough for me. ;)

Can you tell us anything about what will happen in Cursed, the next Alex Verus book, or is it still a secret?
A lot of Cursed is about the relationship between Alex and Luna - although probably not in the way most readers are going to be expecting! There's a lot more about magical creatures and their place in the world (especially Arachne) and we get to see an item that's referenced to in Fated, along with exactly what it can do.

I'm definitely anxious to see more Luna and more magical creatures?  YAY!

Okay, so if you lived in Alex's world what would you like to be, or what ability would you like to have? I have to say that Alex's seer ability was far more useful then I would have ever imagined... it helps that he's a fast thinker too though, not everyone would be able to all that he can do, that's for sure!
Hehe, everyone has a different answer to that one. Probably air magic, just for being able to fly. Although Alex's abilities might just be more useful in the long run!

Yes, being able to fly would be great!  I would be traveling the world... But you're right that Alex's abilities sure would be useful!

I see that you've traveled a bit but you always end up back in London. Of the other places you've lived, or even just visited, which was your favorite and why?
Probably China. I spent half a year there in a small city in Anhui province. It was the first time I'd spent a really long time in a completely different culture and it was quite an experience - especially since there were 200,000 people in the city of whom about 5 were from outside the country! Luckily I speak a little Mandarin but it was still very very different from what I was used to.

I have a friend living in China right now and my aunt lived there for a few years as well.  It's so beautiful, I know that!

I'm an eclectic reader, but I love unique worlds with characters that POP, what book (or series) do you recommend?
One that I read when I was much younger that's always stuck with me is The Book of Night with Moon by Diane Duane. It's an urban fantasy written back when hardly anyone knew what 'urban fantasy' meant, with a set of wizards trying to save New York from a multi-universe threat involving an invasion by dinosaurs. Oh, and the main characters are all cats. If you're an animal lover and a fantasy lover, you'll like it!

Oh I looked it up and it sounds very different!  I'm definitely going to have to read it!

Thanks so much for being on Benedict! I'm looking forward to reading much more from you. And one day I'll travel to London and I'm hoping that you'll 'just happen' to be having a book signing right at that particular time so I can get my books signed. Or you could always have a US tour too. ;)
Heh, I'd love to have a US tour - maybe it'll happen some day! If you ever do come to London look me up so I can plan a signing in advance. And thank you for the very nice review and for doing this interview. I'll keep on writing the Alex Verus series - hope you'll keep on reading them!

I will most definitely let you know if I can make it to London, it's been a dream for a very long time!  And I can't wait for more Alex!

In the meantime, I have a blog (http://benedictjacka.co.uk/) that I update regularly with a series called the Encyclopaedia Arcana that describes the background to Alex's world, as well as news and reviews and updates - the most recent is an email exchange between me and Jim Butcher. If you'd like to find out what's going on with future books, take a look!

About Fated:
Alex Verus is part of a world hidden in plain sight, running a magic shop in London. And while Alex's own powers aren't as showy as some mages, he does have the advantage of foreseeing the possible future—allowing him to pull off operations that have a million-to-one-chance of success.

But when Alex is approached by multiple factions to crack open a relic from a long-ago mage war, he knows that whatever's inside must be beyond powerful. And thanks to his abilities, Alex can predict that by taking the job, his odds of survival are about to go from slim to none...

Interview (& Give@way *ended*) Christina Henry for Black Howl Tour!

Today I am so lucky because I have Christina Henry on the blog!  She's the author the Madeline Black series. I absolutely love this series and you can find my review of Black Wings HERE, and Black Night and Black Howl is a double review you can find HERE

Thanks so much for being on my blog as part of your tour Christina! I'm really enjoying the series and completely adore Madeline and her bold personality.
Thank you so much for having me here today!

Paranormal and urban fantasy are huge right now and running across similar concepts isn't so far fetched. As a matter of fact I recently read several different takes on the grim reaper in different books. Fortunately so far everyone's take is so incredibly different it's like reading about totally different things anyway. I love that yours is an agent of death and it's more like a job with paperwork and all that. When you wrote the book were you concerned about it being unique enough, that it would stand out on it's own? Or did you feel you were just writing the story you needed to tell?
I did want to create something a little bit different, but most of all I was concerned with writing the book that I wanted to write. You can never predict what trends will become big in this field and as a writer you can't worry about those things.

When I was writing BLACK WINGS there were very few stories featuring angels on the market, but the year BLACK WINGS was published there was an angel explosion! Basically, you just never know what else is in the pipe for publishers so you have to focus on writing the best story you can and hope that it finds its audience.

I also think that every writer brings something different to the table even if the basic subject matter is the same. There are tons of vampire stories out there right now, but every author has their own unique take on vampires and that makes each book worth reading.

I completely agree!  Each author makes their own story unique and because your book takes forever to come out you can never really predict what sorts of books will be flooding the market.  But as long as you're writing the story you need to write I think it's all good!

Do you feel like you have Maddy's story pretty well planned out before you start writing or does the story take over once you start?
I write chronologically, and while I have a vague idea of what's going to happen I usually just let the story unfold as I go. Sometimes I'll write a scene that will materially change what I had planned for the book, and I am OK with that. I like the process to be very organic. If you get too caught up in a plan or an outline you can miss an opportunity for your characters or your world.

I think that's smart and often leads to some awesome twists in the plot!

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to writing?
Time! I never seem to have enough of it.

Don't we all?!

Who is your favorite character to write about? And who was the most challenging?
Beezle is my favorite character to write, because he is the most like me. I spend most of my time thinking about food.

Nathaniel is the most challenging because he is never what seems to be. I'm always finding new layers in his personality.

Beezle is my favorite!  I like that you said Nathaniel is the most challenging because he's the one character that seemed to surprise me the most.  I never really knew what he might do.

I have a few series that I feel like are comfort food to me. I'm attached to the world and the characters so much that I never want the series to end. I feel like the characters are actually my friends and I miss them in between books. Usually it takes several books to get that attached but I was feeling that attachment to Madeline about halfway through the second book and I know the year in between books is going to be very long! Do you have any series that you feel that way about? (Two of mine are the Rachel Morgan series aka The Hollows by Kim Harrison and Sookie Stackhouse, of course.)
I love Jim Butcher's Dresden Files, Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse series, Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series and Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunter series. They all have books that I have read and re-read many times.

I have the Dresden Files on my shelves but have yet to read them.  I plan to get to them this year though!  I haven't read the Dark-Hunter series yet either.  I wish I could read faster!

Paranormal shows have been taking over television for several years now are there any that you watch and have become favorites?
Right now I watch "The Walking Dead", "Grimm", and "Once Upon a Time". When "Game of Thrones" and "True Blood" start back up I'll watch those, too. That's probably my upper limit for TV. I prefer shows that are serialized rather than stand-alone episodes, and I don't necessarily watch TV every night. Episodes tend to get stacked up in my DVR and then I'll have to watch large chunks of a show at a time. I like serials because if you watch two or three episodes at a time it's like watching a movie.

We don't get cable anymore and rely on netflix streaming but I'm anxious for Game of Thrones to be on there.  Of course I'd like to read the books first... I like being able to watch several episodes in a row as well.  I get frustrated waiting for the next episode.

If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go and why?
Japan. I love Japanese film, Japanese culture, Japanese food. One of my life goals is to learn to speak Japanese so that I can watch Kurosawa films without the subtitles on.

Oh, my aunt lived in Japan for many years!  She always got us neat things like kimono's and the cool Japanese dolls.  I would love to visit there as well!

If you could time travel what time period and place would you pick?
In theory I like the idea of traveling back in time, but I really don't know if I could live without flush toilets. It would probably be interesting to travel to the future and see what's going to happen next.

Oh I think I'd be scared to travel to the future!  Though if you knew you could get back I sure would be curious to see what you found!

Thanks so much for coming on today! It was a pleasure having you!

Thank you so much!

Review & Give@way (ENDED): Vamplayers by @RusWritesZombie

Vamplayers by Rusty Fischer
Young Adult
Paperback, 384 pgs.
Published December 13th , 2011 by Medallion Press
Source: Author *for review*

At the Afterlife Academy of Exceptionally Dark Arts, Lily Fielding is a measly trainee who dreams of one day becoming a Saviors set his sights on, and befriend her before the Vamplayer can turn her to do his bidding. Before long, however, the Vamplayer sets his sights on Lily's friends, and she is left to face the threat alone while protecting her friends from the dark forces she has sworn to resist.

Last year I read Zombies Don't Cry by Rusty Fischer and I really enjoyed it!  His writing is kind of different because he creates kind of a spoof, it's half ridiculous {in a funny way} and half serious.  Like I giggle at some of the things he comes up with, but yet I grow attached to the characters and I take the story serious, just not too serious. I'm not really a big fan of spoofs, whether it's a movie or a book, it's normally not my thing.  But Rusty makes it work for me.  I actually invest myself in the story.

I found myself sucked into this book quickly and cruised through it in a short period of time.  I never grew bored and it was pretty much steady action going on keeping me turning those pages.  I really enjoyed Lily and her view point on things as well as her ability to kind of let things roll off her shoulders.  She's been going into schools to look for these vamplayers for a very long time and when you've been a student for that long you really learn a lot.

Now these vamplayers kind of sound silly right?  Well, it's not really that silly.  They are young and good looking vampires that stake out girls at high schools and turn them into vampires.  Eventually turning the entire school, or much of it.  There is a bit more to the whole vampire background revealed in the book and I thought it all made sense and worked well.  I think I might have liked a bit more history sooner, but it wasn't a big deal.

I liked that Lily liked the 'underdog', the nerdy, geeky dude.  But I didn't really 'feel' the romance at first.  As the story went on it wasn't really an issue though and it all worked out fine.  I remember thinking in the beginning that I'd like a bit more character development but by the end I no longer felt that way.  So I guess they were gradually fleshed out more as I read on.

Now I really enjoyed this book but it wasn't perfect.  One issue was that Lily was kind of blind to things.  She'd get all these hints about things but she just pretty much ignored them because she was so sure she knew exactly who was guilty and didn't let herself really think otherwise.

Overall this book is a lot of fun with action, romance and friendship.  There's some gore and violence so be aware of that.  I definitely recommend you pick this one up!

4/5 stars

Interview with Antony John and Giveaway *ENDED* of Thou Shalt Not Road Trip {#JustContemporary}

Today I have the pleasure of having Antony John on for Just Contemporary {more about this event HERE}.  I loved Five Flavors of Dumb and was tickled pink when he agreed to an interview and a giveaway of an ARC of his newest book, Thou Shalt Not Road Trip {out in April, 2012}. I'm so jealous of who ever wins this cause I WANT!

Thou Shalt Not Road Trip

When sixteen-year-old Luke's book, Hallelujah, becomes a national best seller, his publisher sends him on a cross-country tour with his unpredictable older brother, Matt, as chauffeur. But when Matt offers to drive Luke's ex-crush, Fran, across the country too, things get a little crazy. Luke thinks he's enlightened, but he really needs to loosen up if he's going to discover what it truly means to have faith, and do what it takes to get the girl he loves.

 Five Flavors of Dumb

The Challenge: Piper has one month to get the rock band Dumb a paying gig.

The Deal: If she does it, Piper will become the band's manager and get her share of the profits.

The Catch: How can Piper possibly manage one egomaniacal pretty boy, one talentless piece of eye candy, one crush, one silent rocker, and one angry girl? And how can she do it when she's deaf?

Piper can't hear Dumb's music, but with growing self-confidence, a budding romance, and a new understanding of the decision her family made to buy a cochlear implant for her deaf baby sister, she discovers her own inner rock star and what it truly means to be a flavor of Dumb.

Diversity in YA is important but it seems like it tends to focus on people of color and GLBT (which is good!) and other things really don't get any focus at all.  So when I started reading Five Flavors of Dumb I was excited to see that the main character was deaf.  Why did you choose to write about a deaf person?  Do you have any personal experience with a person who is deaf?

The decision to write from a deaf perspective came about in a conversation with my wife. I desperately wanted to write a book about music—I have a Ph.D. in music—but there are already a lot of YA books about rock music out there. So my wife suggested that I challenge myself by thinking about music from the point of view of a deaf person. As soon as she said it, I thought: I have to write this book.

At the time, I didn’t have personal experience with deafness (deaf family members, friends, etc). But when I decided to write Five Flavors of Dumb, I knew I needed to do a LOT of research. Four months later, I’d sat in on an ASL class, spoken to audiologists, and befriended two deaf people (one teen, one adult) who kindly chatted about their experiences growing up deaf and also critiqued drafts of the manuscript for me. It was invaluable.

That's great that you did so much research!  And it totally makes this book stand out on another level.

Why did you choose to write a female character instead of a male?  Have you written books with a male as an MC?

I’m asked this a lot, which is interesting to me. Writing from a female perspective was new to me (obviously!), but then, so was writing about someone who is deaf. Come to think of it, I never attended high school in the USA either, and my school in England wasn’t co-ed, so I guess Piper and I have almost nothing in common at all!

As for why I wrote from a female point-of-view . . . it’s because Piper came to me fully formed as narrator of the novel. This was her story from the outset. I couldn’t have written it with any other narrator. But all my other books have a male narrator, so it’s a one-off for now.

Well, I love male narrators too (actually I'm constantly seeking out more of them) so that excites me too!

Piper has a pretty strong family.  They have their issues and that was part of the story.  It seemed like you wove all her issues together so well that none was overwhelming another and although her family issues were there, they weren't the main focus.  Finding a family in YA that is close like hers is, is fairly difficult.  I think that authors have a hard time with families being part of the plot.  And while it's more common in contemporary, it still seems like it's not there as much as I would think.   Okay, so onto the question- do you see any of your own family in Piper's?  Did your own family experiences or people come into the story?

Ooh, interesting question. I must admit that I can empathize with everyone in Piper’s family. There’s the father whose identity was wrapped up in his work and who is now the default stay-at-home dad, and the mother who is forced to compensate by working harder than she ever wanted to. This means that the roles they’ve assumed within the household are not the ones they originally envisaged for themselves. While this situation is not based on my own family experiences—I was a stay-at-home dad for six years, but I loved every minute of it—it wasn’t difficult for me to imagine how hard it would be, and also what a toll it would take on their relationship with their smart (and increasingly independent) daughter.

What Piper’s family does have in common with my own family growing up, is that they are genuinely supportive of one another. And as with my own family, music is one of the things that brings them together.

Piper manages a band in the book, what was your experience with bands as a teen?  Were you in one?

No, I wasn’t in a band. I loved rock music, but actually I was obsessed with classical music. So I played in several orchestras, sang in choirs, etc. But I still kind of wish I had been in a band. (Hey, it’s never too late, right?)

Well, that's what books are for!  You can live vicariously through them ;)

In the book Piper is brought to Kurt Cobains house as well as Jimi Hendrix's old house.  It's part of trying to get her to 'get it' (the music, I mean).  I know you visited these places yourself.  What sort of experience was that?  What did you feel?

Visiting these places was really powerful for me, and even changed the direction of the book. Before I visited Kurt Cobain’s house, I was fairly sure that Piper would remain cynical and be dismissive of the notion of a pilgrimage site for a suicidal rock star. But just sitting there—as Piper does in the novel—and reading all these eulogies written on the park benches, I realized how much this meant to some people. I don’t think you can read all those heartfelt sentiments and not be moved. And I realized that Piper would feel the same way, in spite of herself.

Same with Jimi Hendrix’s house. It was a tiny clapboard house, and the family must have been living on top of each other. It was a poignant reminder that genius can come from anywhere, anytime. (Unfortunately, the house has since been destroyed.)

I visited Kurt Cobains home in Seattle as well and was very moved {but I'm a ginormous fan}.

So are you a fan of Kurt Cobain and Jimi Hendrix?

Oh, yes. I love their music, the intensity of their performances, and the fact that they put themselves fully into their music. I know that a lot of people are cynical of rock stars, but both of them had terrible experiences as teens and fought through them to become global icons. I have a lot of respect for that.

Any favorite songs or albums?

For Jimi Hendrix, my favorites songs are the ones that “appear” in Five Flavors of Dumb: the consecutive performances of “Star-spangled banner” and “Purple Rain” from his set at Woodstock, 1969. Genius.

For Kurt Cobain, I particularly enjoy listening to the two versions of “Where did you sleep last night” that he recorded. One is early—just him and his guitar and an amateur recording device; the other is from the very end of his life—Nirvana’s unplugged performance on MTV. The first is rough around the edges, the latter very polished, but you can tell that Kurt remained essentially unchanged from one to the next. In spite of all the turmoil in his life, these performances remain utterly uninhibited. And that climax . . . wow!

Nirvana Unplugged is my absolute favorite!  I went through many many tapes of that Unplugged in NY I loved it so much.

What kind of music do you listen to these days?

Like a lot of people, I have very eclectic tastes. I’m also continually getting recommendations from my brother, whose knowledge of rock music is encyclopedic. Current favorites are English band Mumford and Sons, French ensemble Paris Combo, and US retro folk band Plume Giant. I particularly respect groups that really know how to play their instruments, and all three are quite virtuosic in that respect.

I also listen to a lot of classical music. Sometimes I find it puts me in a better frame of mind for some types of writing. (Almost every book ends up with its own exceedingly long playlist.)

The cover of Five Flavors of Dumb is quite eye catching and I think it 'fits' the story within quite well.  Did you have any input in it?

No, I didn’t. But I LOVE it. I had visitors when the cover was first emailed to me, and so I opened it up in front of them. All of us just went: Whoa!

Everyone adores the cover, and I think it’s partly because of the layers that the designer Kristin Smith built in: Piper (the cover model) dominates (as she does in the book), but the band is there, plus the chaotic world of indie bands, and a grunge feel infuses the whole thing. It’s hard to imagine a better cover.

Were you much of a reader as a teen?  Any favorites from back then?

No, I’m sorry to say that I was NOT a reader. I read for school (and enjoyed those books very much), but I was a chronically slow reader, and so I tended to use my free time doing other things, mostly music. Even now, I have real sympathy for slow-reading teens; people who read quickly have no idea what life is like for us!

When I did read for pleasure, I was pretty obsessed by S. E. Hinton. Books like The Outsiders and That was then, this is now were completely outside my realm of experience and I found them captivating.

Oh, I was obsessed with S.E. Hinton too!

What about now, any favorite books you find yourself recommending a lot?

Loads of books, to be honest. YA is in a terrific place right now, and every month I find myself recommending a new book. Actually, one of the perks of being an author is that I receive a lot of ARCs to read, and the last three have been awesome:

I just finished a terrific dystopian thriller called Legend by Marie Lu, which will be coming out in November. It’s such an adrenaline rush, and I think it’s that rare book that will appeal to boys and girls equally.

Another is Virtuosity by Jessica Martinez, about a girl preparing for an international violin competition. The author was formerly a professional violinist, and you can really tell. The details just immerse you in what that world would feel like, in all its excitement and claustrophobia. Brilliant book.

Finally, there’s Katana by Cole Gibsen. It doesn’t come out till next spring, but it’s gripping and hilarious, and will appeal to all fans of The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod and Hold Me Closer, Necromancer. (Oh, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans should pre-order a copy too.) Anyone who can balance humor and kick-ass fight scenes in the same chapter is a genius in my book.

Totally loved Virtuosity (and heard Jessica play when I met her and she's amazing!).  Can't wait to read Legend!

What's the best part of being you?  (This question is taken from Dreamland Social Club by Tara Altebrando. It's a fabulous book and you should read it ;)

Yes, I should read it. I’ve heard great things about Dreamland Social Club. I even have a copy at home, which shows how much I want to read it. If it weren’t for that pesky slow-reader condition (see above)!

The best part of being me . . . hmmm, that’s tricky. Because, truthfully, I love everything about being me. I feel insanely fortunate, I really do. I have a wonderful and supportive family, an agent and editor and publisher who are determined to help me become the best writer I can be, and the opportunity to write full time. Perhaps the best part about being me is that everything feels as though it’s in perfect balance right now. That’s a rare gift.

And before you leave I must ask, what's next?  What's your next book?  Anything you're working on that you can share with us?

Absolutely! My next novel, Thou Shalt Not Road Trip, will be released in April 2012. It’s about a 16-year-old boy who writes a spiritual self-help book that becomes a bestseller. When his publisher sends him on a promotional tour along Route 66, things start to get crazy, especially when a former crush hitches a ride.

Then, in fall 2012, the first book in my ELEMENTAL trilogy comes out. It’s set in a dystopian colony of the United States where everyone is born with powers of the elements—earth, water, wind, and fire—except for one boy who is powerless . . . or is he? I’m so psyched about it I can barely see straight.

Thanks so much for being on and I can't wait to read more from you!

Thank you for having me along today, Candace. And thanks to all your readers!
