You know when you go awhile without getting much read? Well, this happened recently. I went nearly a week without getting much read (like one book) and I actually depleted my stored up reviews (that never happens!) so I decided I was going to tackle those novella's I had waiting on my kindle so I could finally get some books under my belt! I'll just review them in the order I read them. This is part one, I still have more I'll review at another time.
Jenny's 1st Adventure (My Very UnFairy Tale Life .5) by Anna Staniszweski
ebook, not sure how many pages, but very short
Source: Free at Smashwords
This is a very short story and is Jenny's first encounter with magic when a gnome (yep, a gnome!) pops into gym class ready to show her the way of the adventurer. It turns out she has been chosen to help solve feuds (or other problems) in magical dimensions.
I loved the writing and the hilarity of everything. Jenny, even though it's a very short time with her, was a character I instantly loved. And the magic stuff in this first short story was pretty awesome! I'll definitely be reading the rest of the books in this series!
Glitches (Lunar Chronicles .5) by Marissa Meyer
ebook, 19 pages
Source: purchased
I really loved Cinder, so I was excited to see how things started when she first arrived with her family. I liked seeing her before she had grown that tough skin we see in Cinder and how she struggled to fit into her new family. We also see when she first discovers she has a way with fixing machines.
It was very short and only took a few minutes to read, but it was a nice reminder of Cinder's personality, even though she changes so much by the time the events in Cinder come about.
I definitely don't have any complaints, this short story did it's job of giving us a picture of her life when she first became a cyborg. I can't wait for Scarlet!
Haunted Destiny (Midnight Dragonfly 1.5) by Ellie James
ebook, 50 pages
Source: Purchased
I enjoyed the first book but when I started this I was surprised that it wasn't the main character from the first book. It's connection wasn't clear to me and I'm not sure if I just forgot stuff or what...
It was still a good story and I loved the setting of New Orleans. It was pretty creepy too (as was the first book). I'm still excited to continue the series and see where things go!
Jenny's 1st Adventure (My Very UnFairy Tale Life .5) by Anna Staniszweski
ebook, not sure how many pages, but very short
Source: Free at Smashwords
This is a more middle grade book, which I didn't really expect, but Jenny didn't feel so young to me for some reason. (She's 9)How does an average girl become a magical adventurer, anyway? Find out in this short e-prequel to My Very UnFairy Tale Life. (Includes fun UnFairy bonus content!)

Glitches (Lunar Chronicles .5) by Marissa Meyer
ebook, 19 pages

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. In “Glitches,” a short prequel story to Cinder, we see the results of that illness play out, and the emotional toll that takes on Cinder. Something that may, or may not, be a glitch...

Teenage mystic Rachelle Dugas knows to expect the unexpected when she fills in for a friend leading a Haunted New Orleans tour. But when she decides to check out a haunted house on her own, nothing prepares her for the secrets lurking in the shadows—or the twist of destiny about to unfold.

I love the cover art for Cinder's prequel. Not sure of which series Haunting Destiny fits in, but I'm realluy curious about the main story now.
ReplyDeleteReally enjoyed the reviews!
The Midnight Dragonfly series is such a great one. I really need to read the second and third book! I keep putting them off.
ReplyDeleteI hate weeks like the one you had. I go nuts after awhile when I can't get something read. ;)
These sound like fun novellas. That's a great idea about tackling them all at once. I have quite a few I need to do that with. Nice mini reviews!
ReplyDeleteWHAT?! There's a Cinder short story prequel? HOW DID I MISS THIS?! I need it immediately:) Love that illustration of her too, it's gorgeous! Mini reviews are so much fun, thanks for these Candace!
ReplyDeleteJenny sounds fun and I like the cover of Destiny.
ReplyDeleteHappy reading,

I didn't read Glitches but I did read The Queen's Army before starting Scarlet and I LOVED it. It really enhanced my reading of the second book of The Lunar Chronicles. I really like this novella-between-the big-book trend going on!
ReplyDeleteLove the novella reviews. I have Glitches, but haven't gotten to it yet. I didn't realize it was so short. I should read it right now.
ReplyDeleteI like that you included all three mini reviews in one post! :)
ReplyDeleteJenny's 1st Adventure is out since I don't really read Middle GRade, but Glitches sounds awesome, especially because I have yet to read Cinder which means I get to read the prequel before the actual book. I bet the changes in Cinder will be even more interesting to me that way.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the lovely mini-reviews.
Great mini reviews! Looking forward to Scarlet & didn't realize there was a prequel to the series. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAwesome mini-reviews. I loved Glitch and the other two are new to me, and I am off to check them out :) Have a nice weekend!
ReplyDeleteI have Glitch, I downloaded it for free last winter and I can't remember if I read it...The MG book sounds cute. Oh thanks to you I now own that dragonfly necklace my husband got it for me for Christmas, since I love dragonflies :)I wore it today in fact.
ReplyDeleteI recently read Cinder so now I am really excited to read Glitches, thanks for making me aware of this, Candace!
