Vivian Maylor can’t sleep. Maybe it’s because she just broke up with her boyfriend and moved to a new town, or it could be the stress of her new job at the hospital. But perhaps it’s because her dreams have started to bleed through into her waking hours.
All of her life Vivian has rejected her mother’s insane ramblings about Dreamworlds for concrete science and fact, until an emergency room patient ranting about dragons spontaneously combusts before her eyes—forcing Viv to consider the idea that her visions of mythical beasts might be real.
And when a chance encounter leads her to a man she knows only from her dreams, Vivian finds herself falling into a world that seems strange and familiar all at once—a world where the line between dream and reality is hard to determine, and hard to control…
Debut author Kerry Schafter has created a fantastic new world and creative story. This book is urban fantasy but has some strong high fantasy elements. Go in knowing this and you should be good, but some who don't like high fantasy didn't care for that aspect. I love high fantasy, so I loved that aspect the best. The book takes place in the here and now, but Vivian has always had these dreams of this place that has dragons and is sort from a fairytale world. This place is actually a real place, even if it is a dreamworld. And it works very well.
Vivian is a doctor and she thinks logically, scientifically. So it's hard for to accept that this stuff she's dreaming of could be real. But it gets to a point where she can no longer deny it. Once she does it's a crazy ride from one reality to another with lots of weird stuff going on.
The book could be confusing, some have found it to be so, but I didn't. For some reason I was able to follow everything quite well and understand what was happening. Yes, at times it was hard to wrap my head around but that was just because it was so crazy. So somehow the author made what is a crazy world with lots of weird twists and turns into something that works and didn't leave me in the dust saying 'whaaat?'. It just worked.
There are some amazing characters in the book. I liked Vivian a lot, but she initially wasn't the one that stood out for me, but as the story continued I really started to like her more and more. The villain was also pretty great. It's hard to talk about her because you need to go in not really knowing what role she plays. It's pretty obvious pretty quickly and I figured it all out long before Vivian did, but it's still something you want to watch unravel and not know before hand. I can tell you this villain is definitely one that you'll want to stab in the eye. And maybe will start wishing a dragon would eat her already... There's another villain as well, and this one is not so cut and dry. He's one of those characters that you really hate, they really do these awful things, but yet they have a sliver (a small one) of decency in them and so you can't quite wish for a dragon to eat them, but yet you wish horrible things up on them.
Another favorite character is actually not a person but a penguin. Yep, seems a bit left field, but you'll see, this is one cool penguin and you'll find yourself wishing you had your own penguin as a side kick...
And the romance... well, it's not a romance that has a chance to develop in this book. There's a lot of eye catching and attraction but they don't even get a chance for more. However it's clear that there WILL be more and I have a feeling I'm going to LOVE it! I already love Zee and see that he's a complicated character (in a good way!) and we get to see a couple different sides to him. The artsy bookish guy at first, the angry guy, determined to do right, and the warrior guy, just following orders, but knowing what's right and wrong and not being able to follow his heart. At first anyway. I'm excited to see where his character goes next.

This book was pretty constant action, I never found myself bored. It was easy to keep reading and cruise through the book and then wish it wasn't over already. It's definitely a series I am dying to read more of, but it doesn't have a cliffhanger (thank goodness!). This book is for mature readers, there's sexual content as well as some very gory scenes (though short and far between).
I definitely recommend you give this book a shot!

Author Q&A
Your publishing journey is a bit different than most people's, can you tell us a bit about how your book was discovered?
Sure. In case everybody here doesn't know about Book Country, it's a fabulous online space for genre fiction writers and readers to share and read fiction, give feedback, and discover new books.Writers are able to post what they've written, and readers and professionals can read and critique. Somewhere around November of 2010, I posted a couple of chapters of Between on Book Country. One of the editors working on the site brought it to the attention of editor Susan Allison at Berkley. She loved what she read and asked for a full, and then made an offer of representation. I went from unrepresented and unpublished to having a dream agent and an awesome book deal within the course of a week!
That is amazing! Now if only we were all so lucky!
Dreams are an important aspect to the story, do you dream and are they as fantastic as the ones in your book?
I do dream, and some of them are wondrous strange. But no – nothing approaching Vivian's dreams! For which I am eternally grateful.I have some pretty active dreams myself, good and bad. Luckily nothing like Vivian's though...
Between is the first in what I assume is going to be a series, can you tell us how many books you plan to have in it? And when can we expect the next book to come out?
I have planned a trilogy. Book Two – tentatively titled Wakeworld – is with my editor awaiting her revision orders. I have not yet been told when to expect publication – I may be as surprised as the rest of you.I hope it's not TOO long!
What can you share with us from the second book? Can you tell us anything about what happens in it (without being spoilery)?
Now that is tricky, since so many people haven't read the first book yet. So anything I tell you about the second book is going to give something away about Between. Also, any and all things are subject to editorial cuts. How about a little teaser excerpt of the current draft?
"Less than two arm lengths away a
dark ungainly form lay twisted and motionless, wings splayed wide in
the sand. Where his right eye had been was now a shattered cavern.
Black blood steamed in the sand.
Zee stood over his kill with the gun
still in his hand, his scarred face alight with his victory.
Vivian watched him, wordless, still
fighting to draw breath. Silent tears ran down her cheeks. He knelt
facing her, reached out a hand to touch her face, but stopped and let
it fall back. "It needed killing. You must see that." A
fresh burn on his cheek, etched there by a splash of dragon blood,
emphasized his words.
"But he didn't know better, Zee.
He was young…" Young and beautiful and alive beyond imagining.
"Even so," he said, and then,
"It was just a dragon, Viv. Don't waste your tears."
She laughed, short and bitter as his
words went home. "Blood of my blood," she said.
Realization dawned in his eyes, too
late. "No, you are not one of them, not really -"
"But I am. And you were made to
hunt them. What are we to do about that?"
Aw, I love it!
Oh, I love when someone is really passionate about something! I'm not familiar with this issue, but it sounds like something that really needs to be worked on. Especially with so many people with mental health issues doing things like shootings in schools and malls, we need to be sure to have the proper treatment for them and easily accessible.
Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my questions!

What is something near and dear to your heart that you would like to share with us?
I work as a mental health counselor and put in five years of time in crisis mental health. One thing I'm passionate about is the abysmal condition of mental health care in the US. Most people have no idea about the extreme shortage of psychiatric hospital beds, or the fact that people in crisis can be held for days in emergency rooms waiting for the treatment bed and the psychiatric care they need. It's something I don't talk about a lot, because once I get started I'm likely to rant for hours. Zipping lips now.Oh, I love when someone is really passionate about something! Ooooh, dragons! I love dragons and sadly haven't seen them around much, especially not in an modern setting. I'd love to read this book and have added it to my TBR list.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of Book Country and plan on check it out. That's great how you got discovered!
And I'm totally with you on the lack of mental heath care issue. My aunt working a mental hospital and told horror stories about the patients had to deal with. Something I saw happen to my Step-father later on.
This sounds awesome!! I am not big on high fantasy, but do enjoy reading them once in a while. And what? a penguin sidekick?! Awesome!!
ReplyDeleteI have been reading a lot more Adult books lately too. I have always liked them, but had been reading mostly YA, then started reading a ton of NA, and now I am back to reading a lot of Adult too. I like switching it up so I get a big variety and don't get in reading slumps as easy.
What a great interview. I love how her book was discovered!
ReplyDeleteEven though this one is high fantasy I think I might mark it down to read. It sounds like you really liked it and I think I would too.
I'm about halfway through this one and have definitely had to pause and sort out what is/isn't going on in this crazy world! Right now, it's hovering at a 3-star read but might scootch up, depending on what happens.
ReplyDeleteI don't really much fantasy, but this certainly sounds great. Great review. Thanks for sharing the Q&A too.
ReplyDeleteJenea @ Books Live Forever
I love that the author is so passionate about mental health. It is certainly a field that needs improvement.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that you are so passionate about mental health care. It is very true that psychiatric hospitals are very difficult to find a space in during a crisis situation. Sadly, many facilities that do offer such things are not really very compassionate or caring towards patients. I know from experience, unfortunately. Much like you, I could go on and on, so I will zip my lips as well :) Anywho, your book sounds awesome. Can't wait to read it.
ReplyDeleteArtsy bookish guy you say? WIN! I'm not a huge high fantasy person, but I definitely like it for something different in between my standard paranormal reads, so this is going on the list. I kind of like that the romance doesn't develop fully in this first book, it gives me something to look forward to in future installments!
ReplyDeleteBrook - the dragons were so much fun to write! Book Country is definitely worth checking out, both to find great new authors, as well as to get your own work read if you write. As for the mental health system, it is horribly broken and, sadly, there are horror stories both for patients and staff.
ReplyDeleteAmy - I hear you on switching up the reading. I tend to swing between fantasy (of all types), mysteries, and thrillers, with the occasional YA
KindleMom - thank you for being willing to give it a try! I think of the book as Contemporary Fantasy, sort of a mix of Urban and High.
Mary - thanks for slogging through! Fingers crossed that you like the ending, but if not I value your honest review
Jenea - I'd be interested in hearing your opinion if you do decide to read
Tia - hugs to you for that. The need is immense, and there's not much being done about it
Rachel - I am so deeply sorry that you have had that experience. There are a lot of compassionate and wonderful people working in those facilities, I know - but the system is terribly broken
Jenny - Yay!! The characters didn't have much time for romance - they were sort of busy staying alive and stuff, lol.
Congrats to Kerry on the new release! It sounds fantastic and I had already started to hear great buzz :)
ReplyDeleteThis new series looks promising and the fact that it has dreamworlds in it is going to be exciting!!
ReplyDeleteI tried to get into this so many times! Tried and dropped it, tried and dropped... well, you get the picture. In fact, I haven't been able to force myself to read on mostly because I failed to connect with Vivian. But now that I see you had the same problem and you got over it, I'll retry tonight, be more persistent and see where it gets me. Hopefully I'll end up surprised.
ReplyDeleteGreat review and thank you for the interview.
I love urban fantasy and all of the elements in this book sound so exciting. Awesome interview and I loved your review, thanks for the chance to win a copy..either way I will get this one!
ReplyDeleteYeah for a new debut Urban Fantasy. I think this sounds like a lot of fun and hooray for Kerry for finally getting published. Mental Health is a tough profession and I admire her work and determination to make it better. Thanks so much for being a part of Fire and Ice and helping me kick it off today!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway. I love that book cover.
ReplyDeleteThe author's journey to being published sounds unbelievably quick. I was it were that easy for everyone.

I would usually not think twice about a book once it mentions dragons. It's rare when I do. But this sounds good! Maybe because it's UF, or the dreams... Idk, but I'm interested.
ReplyDeleteWow, that IS an amazing publishing story.
Great review and interview!
Wow, Dragons and penguins and villians you want to "stab in the eye"? Sounds like a packed book! I love the idea of a logical doctor having to bend her mind around the fantastic...and I love villians that you love to hate but want to love! Sounds great!
ReplyDeleteI love crazy... and crazy that works? WIN! Oh and I'd love to want a penguin. I think my pups would be pleased. Usually I want a hellhound. LOL
ReplyDeleteLove the interview and I don't know anything about being passionate about something you seem to go on and on about *coughCurrentDogBookReviewcough* ;) Hm... I guess I can sympathize. :D
Oooh, this book sounds right up my alley. I love high fantasy. I've actually been surfing around trying to find a good high/epic fantasy. And the love the cover. Thanks for the recommendation!
ReplyDeleteThis book hasn't come up on my radar at all yet! I'm adding it on my TBR right after this. I'm so glad you featured it today. Being totally open to high fantasy, I'd love to see what she does with mixing it up with UF.
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree with you, I love when someone speaks about something they are truly passionate about!
Great review and interview... and thanks for the giveaway!!!
Never heard of this author but I love the cover and the synopsis. Oh and I love that the romance is not quite there but growing, hmm, I'm adding this to my tbr pile.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a great book!
ReplyDeleteI love how she got "discovered" in that site. It's like Justin Bieber getting his break from Youtube. That's what I call serendipity.
ReplyDeleteFirst time I've heard of this book. Definitely adding this to my tbr list!
ReplyDeleteI just read a more negative review and was so disappointed because I'm really looking forward to reading Between. I'm glad to have read your review, it's good to get a number of opinions on a book.
ReplyDeleteCandace, thank you so much for hosting me here today. This has been an awesome and amazing visit - so many wonderful comments.
ReplyDeleteThanks to all of you readers, as well!
I love the author's passion for Mental Health. I work as a mental health technician on an inpatient psychiatric unit, and I agree about the abysmal condition of mental health in the US!
ReplyDeleteThe book sounds wonderful!
Sounds like an interesting book :) thanks for sharing..
ReplyDeleteThis sounds terrific thanks for the giveaway :D
ReplyDeleteSounds like a cool book, and I love the cover. Thanks for the chance to win it.

Loved the interview, and the review. This book sounds awesome.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds fantastic! I love a well-thought-out dream world.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great read! Thanks for the chance to win a copy.
ReplyDeletesound like a great read so i hope to win a copy.
ReplyDeletethanks for making this international
Okay, I must get my hands on this book! I haven't tested the boundaries of high fantasy meets Urban, but I can imagine how fantastic it could be!
ReplyDeleteGreat review!
Im not to big on fantasy reads i need a good book to change my mind lol
ReplyDeleteYou obviously have a knack for finding great books.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard of this before but I'll be adding it to my TBR list!
Thanks for sharing! :-)
Thanks for the review.
ReplyDeleteerma2167@sbcglobal.net
I love the look and feel of this book! I hope I get to read it in the future
ReplyDeleteGreat world building and awesome characters? Count me in! :)
ReplyDeleteI am planning on becoming a mental health counselor also. I have a B.A. in Psychology and need to go back to school to get a Master's in Mental Health Counseling. I agree there is a huge lack of mental health care available. I had no idea people stay in ERs for days--something really has to be done about that. There is still to this day a lot of confusion and misinformation about mental health issues as well, which is really frustrating to me. Thanks for the interview--it's really cool to read about someone who works in crisis counseling. Bless you for your work!
Wow!! thanks for a great post! The cover is really pretty!!! Headed to add it to my TBR list right now!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway!
Love
Katy
This sounds exciting. We don't get dragons much anymore. And a doctor having to deal with paranormal/dream-worlds...nice.
ReplyDeleteBut what do you mean the romance doesn't really develop in this book??? No, not another "wait til the next book" situation! They just love stringing us along...
Boy, now I sound like my sister's kid, not being able to wait 5 minutes for anything, lol.
Thanks for the nice review and great giveaway!
Wow, that's like the equivalent of dancing on a table and getting cast in a musical! I love it! And I love the concept of this book. Can't wait to read it.
ReplyDeleteOoohhh I've been wanting to get this book. It sounds really good and I'm so looking forward to reading it. Thank you for a chance to win this book in your giveaway!!
