Laying hands upon the injured and dying, Avry of Kazan assumes their wounds and diseases into herself. But rather than being honored for her skills, she is hunted. Healers like Avry are accused of spreading the plague that has decimated the Territories, leaving the survivors in a state of chaos.
Stressed and tired from hiding, Avry is abducted by a band of rogues who, shockingly, value her gift above the golden bounty offered for her capture. Their leader, an enigmatic captor-protector with powers of his own, is unequivocal in his demands: Avry must heal a plague-stricken prince—leader of a campaign against her people. As they traverse the daunting Nine Mountains, beset by mercenaries and magical dangers, Avry must decide who is worth healing and what is worth dying for. Because the price of peace may well be her life....
I have been wanting to pick up one of Maria V. Snyder's fantasy books, and have even owned Poison Study for ages, but this one was cheap for kindle and the second one was offered for review. So this ended up being the first series I started with. And oh my goodness, I fell in love! I know there are many devoted fans of hers out there and it seems like those that read her books tend to absolutely LOVE her, I haven't really seen a middle ground so much. So here I am, her newest devoted fan. {I did read her Inside Out, Outside In books, but they are very different.}Also note that while I believe this is technically adult and is found in the adult section, it works quite well as a Young Adult book as well. Any sexual situations are glossed over or faded out.
I was swept into this world and Avry's character right away. There wasn't any slow moving bits and from the moment I picked the book up I desperately wanted to keep reading. Avry is a very strong character. She's strong willed, smart and resourceful. She's learned her way all these years of hiding. When she's kidnapped (or saved, however you want to look at it) by a bad of rogues you don't know if this is good or bad. But within pages you know that these are good guys. But Avry has her reservations because they want her to heal someone she doesn't believe is a good person. Through a lot of witty banter and lots of saving of lives we come to love the band of rogues that hauls Avry across the country (or countries, kingdoms, whatever). We laugh, we cry and we totally fall for their antics.
This book has a pretty fantastic romance as well even though it's not much of a romance in this book. The two characters get to know each other, which I liked, I liked that emotion that grew between them over time. I was surprisingly not annoyed with this romance (and how long it took to develop) and was happy with how it progressed even though there were times I wanted to smack Avry for being so blind. I definitely think this is something that will be even better in the next book.
I really could go on about everything, but really all you need to know is that it has great characters (good and evil), has fantastic world building, and will keep you on your toes and with a smile on your face. Absolutely stunning start to what is sure to be a new favorite series for me.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it so much! I personally prefer Poison Study to this, but Maria's books are all amazing to me. I'm in love with her writing!
ReplyDeleteLove your review. the only thing I don't agree with is the romance, because I hate Kerrick for what he did to Avry in the beginning of the novel.
I really like Maria Snyder too and enjoyed this book a lot. I'm looking forward to reading book 2 in the series.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard much about this one, but it sounds fantastic! I read Poison Study YEARS ago (pre Shefari days) and I didn't love, but I really think if I read it now I would like it a lot more.
ReplyDeleteI have to say, I wasn't the biggest fan of the first in this series. But I just finished this one and I really liked it! Sad that the lovebirds were apart for so much of the book but it was definitely necessary.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you liked this one, I love her Study series so I picked these up too just guessing that I would love them as well but it is nice to hear that others are liking it too.
ReplyDeleteGreat review!
YAY! I totally loved this book as well! So freaking good. Nice review :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't read anything by Maria V. Snyder yet Candace! Clearly, I should start with this series. I love that the romance is really slow to develop, I live for that kind of tension between characters. Anything that gets a 5 from you automatically goes on my list. Can't wait!
ReplyDeleteYay I'm so glad you loved this book! Maria V. Snyder is my most favorite author EVER! And actually, in my opinion, Poison Study is even better than this series, so I would recommend reading that one as well! I too really loved the romance in this book; I liked the fact that it took so long to develop, and I also love that Avry was really kick-butt. Awesome review!!

I have heard amazing things about this author. This sounds like a great book. Awesome review!!
ReplyDeleteWow, this sounds great. I've heard of the Inside Out and Outside in books, but wasn't familiar with this series. Thanks for introducing me to it.
ReplyDeleteAmber, I will definitely read Poison Study soon! I have heard amazing things!
ReplyDeleteNatalie,
I just got book two and I'm going to read it really soon!
Lori, I think you would LOVE this book!
Mary, This is the first in the series (according to goodreads) so I'm assuming you mean Scent of Magic?
Jenny, yes, you must read them! SO good!
Emily, see- I said people that love Maria V. Snyder LOVE her and I know I'm definitely going to be devouring her books!
I've seen this author everywhere and wondered...but now I think I really should pick her up! I love a strong lead female and a slow developing romance!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea this was an adult title, I thought it was YA. Wow!
ReplyDeleteI feel like I'm really missing out on this author. I've heard great things about her since Poison Study too, but have yet to try her myself. Glad to know the romance was well developed even if this isn't exactly a romance book. That makes me happy!
Happy New Year, Candace!
I loved Avry, but I didn't like Kerrick at all in this book. I really hated that guy and never warmed to him in this book. I wanted to smack him instead of Avry. LOL I did love the rest of the rogues tho... :) I also need to read her other series.
ReplyDeleteYou know I passed up a chance at an ARC of this one last year because this was a book that got intially some not so great reviews but as of late I have been seeing some really great reviews on this series, and I am reconsidering. I mean a five star nod from you says a lot!
ReplyDeleteI love this series to death, but Poison is still my fave.
ReplyDeleteI haven't actually read Inside Out yet, but have been meaning to.
Happy reading,
Brandi from Blkosiner’s Book Blog
Huh, I always thought that this one focuses heavily on the romance, and yet now I learn that the romance is very light. Oddly, this makes me even more eager to read it. I've never read one of Snyder's books, and this sounds like a great place to start.
ReplyDeleteWonderful review!
Missie, I think I thought it was YA too, it's one of those that's kind of in-between because a YA audience would love it as well. And it doesn't necessarily FEEL adult, it's just that the characters are adults.
ReplyDeleteMelissa, People keep saying they didn't like Kerrick and I'm kind of surprised I was able to forgive him actually quite easily. I warned up to him after those incidences and once they started saving each other over and over. But I can kind of see why people might not love him. I have heard some say they didn't like him in the first one but loved him in the second too.
Heidi, I kind of remember that. I wasn't going to start with this series just because there were some less than stellar reviews. But yeah, I keep hearing from lots of people that they loved it now, so I don't know... I know I loved it!
Maja, I didn't feel like it focused on the romance, but that tension between them was there the whole time. Bad tension at first and eventually more sexual tension.
I've yet to read any of Snyder's books, but have heard wonderful things. I'm glad you took a chance and ending up loving Touch of Power!
ReplyDeleteIf you like this book, you'll almost certainly like Poison Study; they have a lot of similarities in character and tone albeit very different settings and plots.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason I assumed that this is a YA book because her previous books were YA. Also, I haven't read any of her books, but now I SO want to!
ReplyDeleteA developing romance? Yes please!
Awesome review!
I loved Poison Study, and this one seems equally fantastic! I love how Snyder's romances build slowly and are a solid and important part of her stories , but they don't overwhelm them - at east that's how I felt about the one in the PS series.
ReplyDeleteI've been on the fence about this series since I loved The Poison Trilogy so much and haven't really enjoyed too many of Snyder's other books, like her Glass Trilogy Companion Series to the Poison Trilogy. I'm so glad you enjoyed this one though, Candace, so I think I've got to check it out now! :) Amazing review, dear!
ReplyDeletea lot of the blogs I follow really like this. A friend of mine compared it to Throne of Glass and I really love that series. If this is anything like that I better get started.
ReplyDeleteI'm in the same boat as you were - I've heard great things about Maria V. Snyder and I'm sure I'll love her books, but I just haven't read anything yet. I do really like the idea behind this book (series), but her Study series is calling to me even more. We'll see. I'm glad that you liked your first book by her, and this review has solidified my need to read something by her in the very near future!
ReplyDeleteI loved this book (although I thought it was YA). I agree that the romance was done well. Kerik came off very hard at first, but I like that it took time to warm up.
