Review: Spark by Amy Kathleen Ryan

Spark (Sky Chasers #2) by Amy Kathleen Ryan
Hardcover, 309 pages
Expected publication: July 17th, 2012 by St. Martins Griffin
Source: Amazon Vine

Waverly and Kieran are finally reunited on the Empyrean. Kieran has led the boys safely up to this point, and now that the girls are back, their mission seems slightly less impossible: to chase down the New Horizon, and save their parents from the enemy ship. But nothing is truly as it seems…Kieran’s leadership methods have raised Seth’s hackles— and Waverly’s suspicions. Is this really her fiancĂ©? The handsome, loving boy she was torn from just a short time before? More and more, she finds her thoughts aligned with Seth’s. But if Seth is Kieran’s Enemy No. 1, what does that make her?

In one night, a strange explosion rocks the Empyrean—shooting them off course and delaying their pursuit of the New Horizon—and Seth is mysteriously released from the brig. Seth is the most obvious suspect for the explosion, and Waverly the most obvious suspect for releasing him. As the tension reaches a boiling point, will Seth be able to find the true culprit before Kieran locks them both away—or worse? Will Waverly follow her heart, even if it puts lives at risk? With the balance of power precarious and the clock ticking, every decision counts… every step brings them closer to a new beginning, or a sudden end...

I had to go back and look at my review of Glow because I remember being completely sucked into it, but I had it in my head as being a very weird read.  Once I read the review it seemed very much like the review I'll have for this one, only I think I was even more sucked into this second book than I was the first.

I have all sorts of mixed feelings about the characters, but that's actually a reason why I like it so much.  These kids are thrown in this horrific situation and they go a little crazy.  They are scared and they are angry, and they don't really know what to do.  All of them seem to make mistakes over and over again and I dislike them all at some time or another.  But like I said in my review of the first one, these are mostly good kids, they just have to deal with things they shouldn't have to, and make decisions that are extremely difficult.  Unfortunately  it takes a bit for them to learn from their mistakes.

In this book I'm pretty firm on which male character I like the best.  Of Seth and Kieran, anyway.  I really feel we got a better feel for their real personalities.  But the joy in this series is that you really never know how things will go in the future.  Perhaps I'll change my mind again.  And this one had a good mix of Kieran, Waverly and Seth's point-of-view.  I liked the mix, to see it from so many sides.

This was an easy book to fly through for the simple fact it was constant action and impossible to put down.  I had to know what was going to happen next!  I also liked that this book gets the emotions going.  Mostly anger and frustration, but also seeing how some of the side characters really stepped up and were awesome, they turned into real heroes while some completely became insane and kept making stupid choices.

I'm generally not a sci-fi gal (love fantasy, but sci-fi, not so much) but there are a few series that really pull me in, and this is definitely one.  It's different, and it has some weirdness (mostly having to deal with religion, which I'm just not exactly sure what I think of) but I like it.  And I like that feeling of really getting immersed in a world and characters.  This book definitely did that for me.  The end was a bit of a cliffhanger, but it kind of seemed like a good spot to quit.  Well, maybe I would have liked another chapter added on.  But as it was it worked good and I have to say that I am dying to get my hands on the next book!

Review: Tributary by Lisa Bergren

Tributary (River of Time #3.2) by Lisa Bergren
Ebook novella
Published June 8th, 2012
Source: Purchased
TRIBUTARY, a novella (1/2 the length of a normal novel), picks up a year after BOURNE... Lia struggles to overcome the fear that constant battle has heaped upon her; Gabi and Marcello face an unexpected crisis; and Lord Greco just may be ready to leave the grief and loss of his past behind him, so that he might grab hold of the future...
Spoiler free for the previous books
If you are a regular reader of my blog  you may remember that I absolutely adore the River of Time series by Lisa Bergren.  I read each book the moment it comes out and I do everything I possibly can to convince the world the read the books.  In fact, this is my most recommended series because it has something for everyone.  Even my brothers have read and enjoyed the books quite a lot.  One thing that I know makes some people a little afraid to read them is that Lisa Bergren is a Christian author.  They don't want to be preached at or feel like something is overly religious.  I can't speak for Lisa's other books (though my mother LOVES them) but this series definitely does not feel Christian.  They are clean reads, and there is mention of prayer but there's not the elements I normally see in in Christian fiction.  So please, do not let that hold you back.  This series is full of some of the most romantic scenes I've ever come across and has some of the best battle scenes I've ever read.  Every character stands out and every moment I'm reading the books I'm completely immersed and never bored.

Now as for this book in particular.  It's another novella that comes a year after BOURNE ends.  It has a bit more focus on Lord Greco (YAY!) but is narrated by Lia quite a lot.  There are some new characters brought in to the story as well.  First of all a girl, Allessandro from the other side of the border.  I loved how she had all these conflicting feelings but was so sure her side had to be right and that this side was wrong.  She just had to experience things to really discover how things worked.

This book had action but a little less battle, which was fine by me since it's a novella.  Now it is half the length of a novel, but it felt long to me.  Maybe I've read too many shorter novella's lately, but this almost felt like a full length novel.  As far as content goes, I mean.  I cruised through it and of course wanted more, but it felt like a full complete story and I loved that!  I'm always ready for more of this series and I really hope Lisa sells more and if not I hope these novella's just keep coming.  I know I'll keep reading them anyway!

If you haven't yet started the series you really must do so!  The order goes:
Waterfall
Cascade
Torrent
Bourne
Tributary

Review: Smart Girls Get What They Want by Sarah Strohmeyer

Smart Girls Get What They Want by Sarah Strohmeyer
Hardcover, 352 pages
Published: June 26th, 2012 by Balzer + Bray
Source: Publisher

Gigi, Bea, and Neerja are best friends and total overachievers. Even if they aren't the most popular girls in school, they aren't too worried. They know their "real" lives will begin once they get to their Ivy League colleges. There will be ivy, and there will be cute guys in the libraries (hopefully with English accents) But when an unexpected event shows them they're missing out on the full high school experience, it's time to come out of the honors lounge and into the spotlight. They make a pact: They will each take on their greatest challenge--and they will totally "rock" it.

Gigi decides to run for student rep, but she'll have to get over her fear of public speaking--and go head-to-head with gorgeous California Will. Bea used to be one of the best skiers around, until she was derailed. It could be time for her to take the plunge again. And Neerja loves the drama club but has always stayed behind the scenes--until now.

These friends are determined to show the world that smart girls really can get what they want--but that could mean getting way more attention than they ever bargained for. . . .

I hadn't heard of this book until it showed up unexpected in my mailbox one day and since it was nearly time for it to be released I figured I'd better get it read.   And wow!  What an awesome surprise!  I totally got into this book right away and fell in love with Gigi and her awesome personality.  She's kind of middle of the road as far as her personality goes.  She's not afraid to speak up, but she doesn't do so all the time, she sometimes holds it in.  But she's the kind of girl I love to read about, she really stood out for me and I absolutely loved her!  Yes, she was a little clueless sometimes when it came to boys, but she handled everything pretty good and I loved that she didn't go completely gaga when a boy gave her attention.  She did in her head at first, but she didn't really lay it all out, which made her really smart in my book.  (Meaning she didn't totally make a fool of herself when she so easily could have.)

What I loved the most was her devotion to her friends.  She always put them first.  She made some mistakes, but she learned from them immediately and didn't make the same mistake again.  She was willing to pretty much do anything for them, even if it basically meant risking her life.  Friendships like that are hard to find.  I would like Gigi to be my best friend.

The romance in this book is one of those that's a little bit twisty.  There are two boys that could be potential love interests and I don't want to give anything away, so I'm going to be vague.  But it's not really a love triangle.  It's some difficult choices for Gigi though, that's for sure!  And the romance, well, it becomes clear how it's going to go and from that point on it's so sweet!  Yes, I like the sweet kind of romance.  The kind that's not firy passion, but more the quiet 'perfect for each other' kind of thing.  Especially when the tension is between the characters for a long time, where you really feel the vibe and just hope your hardest that they'll finally figure it out.  It's the kind of romance I like anyway.

I went in knowing nothing about this book so I had zero expectations.  But it ended up being a very fun ride.  I had plenty of giggles along the way and it was a light, non stressful read.  I very highly suggest you pick it up, it's perfect for summer!

Disclosure:  I received a copy for review purposes.  All opinions expressed are my own and I was not paid or influenced in any way.

This book qualifies for the YA Contemporary Challenge 2012.

Cover Reveal & Exerpt of Keystone by @MistyProvencher

Today I get the pleasure of revealing the cover of the second book in the Cornerstone series by Misty Provencher.  If you weren't already aware, I'm a huge fan of it (find my review HERE) and am so happy I get to share the next book with you all! And here you all go, I present you with Keystone!

Chapter 1 – KEYSTONE- Pages 1-2
WARNING: This is an excerpt from Keystone, the second book in the Cornerstone Series.  This excerpt will definitely contain spoilers for the first book.  Please feel welcome to try out the first five chapters of Cornerstone at: http://mistypro.blogspot.com/p/cornerstone-chapter-one.html
This excerpt is part of a Blog Hop.  In order to read the entire first chapter, please visit all the awesome Blog Hop stops listed here:  http://mistypro.blogspot.com/  to find the other pages!

It was easy to pick up the Cornerstone.
            Easy to be brave.
Easy to be sure that I wanted to be an us.
Really, it was easy to be anything an hour ago, when I was numb.
Then the first white-hot streak of pain blazed up my arm and all the numb went up in flames.
Now the stone gives one massive throb in my palm, like a heart beat or a drum beat or the last beat right before blast off - and the pain shoots up to my shoulder, like my skin is being hollowed out with a poker.  I stop the scream by snapping my jaw shut on the edge of my tongue.  I taste blood.
Garrett’s face floats above me like a beautiful, worried balloon.
“All you have to do is hang on,”  he says.  His voice is calm as I struggle to keep my own mouth clamped shut.  I don’t want to scream in his face.  I want to be the girl that brings courage to this fight, not fear.  I swallow the blood.  “Just hang on, like the Addo told you.”
I try to rifle back through what the Addo had said hours ago.  Once I’d picked up the stone, Addo had come and eased himself back down onto the edge of the bed to explain what would happen during re-Impressioning.  He groaned as he adjusted the towel that someone made into a make-shift cast and sling for his arm and I gripped the stone tighter.  It was easier to be brave looking at him.  Our Addo is the only remaining leader in the entire Ianua community, but The Fury had nearly killed him like they had the other twelve.  His broken teeth, and the bruises that splashed across his face, beneath his eye bandage, made his smile excruciating for both of us.
"Not gonna lie, kiddo.  Re-Impressioning is miserable stuff,”  he’d said.  I should've paid attention to how Garrett squeezed my hand a little then, but I was too busy looking at how the bruises swirled around the Addo's lips.  I was trying to imagine the people who had put them there.  The same people who had killed Garrett’s father.  The same ones that my own father had probably called friends.
“The stone always wipes the slate clean,” the Addo had continued.  Every word made him wince a little.  “No matter what's there, the stone is going to start fresh.  Since the ground work of your enhanced nervous system is already there, from your first attempt, the pain this time around will be enhanced too.  And by pain, I mean it'll be like swallowing tacks.  The only thing I can tell you is to just hang in there.  At least, you’ve got the odds going in your favor."
“Odds?” I’d asked.  The Addo closed his mouth then and his voice popped into the back of my head.
            Everything comes with risks, kiddo.
You mean I might die.   I didn’t know how much I even cared if it happened, but I wanted to know what to expect.  I projected my question back to him as carefully as I could, but he still flinched with it.
Sure, sure… he hedged.  But you could just as easily go belly up choking on half a peanut, couldn’t you?  I mean, there’s always odds to anything, isn’t there?  What’s the odds that you’d be attacked by, say, a pack of rabid dingos?
Ok.  I’d shrugged.  So what are my odds?
Oh, percentages…bah!  You can figure percentages any which way, really…
But if we were talking about a whole cookie,  I squared my gaze on him and his blue-and-purple eyelids drooped a little more.

Guest Post: How Loving Emily became Any Other Night by Anne Pfeffer & Giveaway!

Back in November of 2011 I had Anne Pfeffer on for an interview.  You can find that HERE.  When Anne contacted me again about the changes and doing a guest post I was all over it!  Here's Anne talking about the changes and at the end you'll find a giveaway!

How Loving Emily became Any Other Night

by Anne Pfeffer

I learned how much my book's title and cover mattered when I changed them. Seven months after publication.

I called my first novel Loving Emily, mainly because I couldn't think of anything better. Loving Emily had been a working title that fit the story really well during its early versions, when it was primarily a romance. But over time, the focus of the book changed. It became more and more just about Ryan, while Emily, although she was always his love interest, became increasingly the antagonist in the story.

I was aware of the problem, but frankly couldn't come up with an alternative title. Just as I changed the opening paragraphs over and over again, trying to perfect them, I played with titles, pulling phrases from the book, brainstorming with people. But nothing seemed right.

So I had a cover made and published the book as Loving Emily. And it got good reviews, except for the one teensy ongoing problem that my readers didn't always love Emily. I thought her behavior, although imperfect, was pretty realistic for a girl in her situation. But some readers thought she was selfish and didn't support Ryan enough.

It bothered me to have a title that wasn't quite right. I started brainstorming ideas again, with the same non-results. Nothing worked. I can't explain how or why it suddenly came to me, but one day it just did.

Any Other Night.

It's ironic how long it took me to think of it, given that "any other night" are the first three words of the book. Any other night, I'd be down for driving my best friend Michael to the party, but tonight is different.

It was the perfect title. It had that feeling of regret, of "if only." If only Ryan had done this differently or that differently, his friend Michael wouldn't have died. It evoked that weird element of chance, the idea that a tiny step, taken in one direction or the other, can alter your life forever.

I was ecstatic. I had my title. And no cover to go along with it.

I'm not an artist or a designer. I have to rely on someone else's vision for covers, and it makes it hard. I'd been searching out stock photos for a long time, trying to find something I liked. Finally, I saw a photo of a teenage boy in profile, looking sad and moody. I might add that he was a gorgeous hunk of teenage boy and exactly what Ryan had always looked like in my mind.

I slapped down fourteen dollars for the royalty-free photo, added the title in a fetching Arial font, and published it. With a little note saying "Look what I did!" I proudly sent it off to show my talented designer friend Dalya.

She fired back a response within minutes. "This won't do," she said. "Send me your photo."

She made me the cover of my dreams.

Since then, Any Other Night has been selling much faster than Loving Emily ever did. And my reviews are even better than they were before! Now, people's expectations are more in line with what the book's really about—Ryan and his story. Unlike the old title, which oversold Emily, the new title allows readers to make up their own minds about her and accept her the way she is.

Changing a book's title and cover isn't easy, but it can be done. In my case, it was well worth it.

About Any Other Night:
Any other night, Ryan Mills would have driven his best friend, Michael, to Emily's sweet sixteen party at the Breakers Club. Instead, determined to win over the birthday girl, he goes to the party early and alone, setting off a chain of events that ends with a car accident in which Michael dies.

Ryan blames himself for what happened to Michael. As far as he's concerned, he doesn't deserve to have love or ever be happy again. Then he learns Michael left a secret behind. Ryan feels compelled to take on his friend's unfinished business, and in the process, changes his life forever and becomes a man.

A NOTE ABOUT CONTENT: in this book, some characters use profanity, engage in nonexplicit sexual activity, or take illegal drugs.

Personally I *really* like the new cover!  And that font is freaking awesome!

Pay it Forward Giveaway!

The Pay It Forward Giveaway Hop, which will take place during the last week of June (June 23rd - June 30th) is inspired by the author Catherine Ryan Hyde (author of Pay it Forward) and is hosted by Roof Beam Reader and Shooting Star Mag.

I love the whole Pay it Forward thing so I wanted to participate in this hop.  This is the chance for people to really help get recognition for some books (or things) they really love and don't feel it has gotten the recognition it deserves.

So for this giveaway I'm giving away a book from a list of books that I think deserve more recognition.  One winner can pick one of the following books.  It can be an ebook or a finished copy but it has to be available to you (and $15 or less).  If you live outside the US it's possible that some of these books aren't available to you.  If you're the winner we can figure that out.  If you are an international winner your prize can be an ebook or a book from The Book Depository.  If you're in the US it may come from various sources.  Note: At the time of typing this up ALL books are available at The Book Depository in paperback.

Once again Cornerstone is on my list.  Seriously, you really need to read this book!
Nalena Maxwell has been branded ‘The Waste’ at her new school, due to her mom's obsessive paper hoarding. Nalena desperately wants something to change in her life, but when she receives a sign (and it's the wrong dang one) inviting her into a mysterious, ancient community, too much changes. What she knew of her family, what she thought of her life and what she believed about her future, is no longer applicable. Seventeen years worth of family skeletons come crashing into Nalena's life and it is the boy...the one that smiles at her like he wants to hear everything she'll ever say...that already knows her powerful secrets. But it is only Nalena that can choose between protecting the life that is already crumbling beneath her feet and the one that might sacrifice everything she could ever have.
Waterfall or any of the books in the River of Time series.  This is my most recommended series, I tell everyone to read it!

What do you do when your knight in shining armor lives, literally, in a different world?

Most American teenagers want a vacation in Italy, but the Betarrini sisters have spent every summer of their lives among the romantic hills with their archaelogist parents. Stuck among the rubble of the medieval castles in rural Tuscany, on yet another hot, dusty archaeological site, Gabi and Lia are bored out of their minds...until Gabi places her hand atop a handprint in an ancient tomb and finds herself in fourteenth-century Italy. And worse yet, in the middle of a fierce battle between knights of two opposing forces.

Suddenly Gabi's summer in Italy is much, much more interesting.

Fated is one urban fantasy that just hasn't quite gotten all the attention it deserves.  If you've already read Fated you may pick Cursed (book 2) instead.  This is an adult series and you must be 16 or older to win.
Alex Verus is part of a world hidden in plain sight, running a magic shop in London. And while Alex's own powers aren't as showy as some mages, he does have the advantage of foreseeing the possible future--allowing him to pull off operations that have a million-to-one-chance of success.

But when Alex is approached by multiple factions to crack open a relic from a long-ago mage war, he knows that whatever's inside must be beyond powerful. And thanks to his abilities, Alex can predict that by taking the job, his odds of survival are about to go from slim to none...

Kushiel's Dart or any of the books in the series.  This is my all time most favorite series EVER.  There are 3 trilogies and if you've started them already you can pick whichever book you want.  But this is the first one.  Just be warned, this is very adult, and you must be 18 to win this one.  It's also not for those who are squeamish as there's quite a bit of everything.  Fighting, gore, sex- the whole lot.  But this is EPIC.  This series has gone far and beyond any other fantasy series I've read.  Whether you win or not, read it!  (This first book is a bit hard to get into, but stick with it because it gets good.  But the second and third are when things REALLY get EPIC!)

The land of Terre d'Ange is a place of unsurpassing beauty and grace. It is said that angels found the land and saw it was good...and the ensuing race that rose from the seed of angels and men live by one simple rule: Love as thou wilt.

Phèdre nó Delaunay is a young woman who was born with a scarlet mote in her left eye. Sold into indentured servitude as a child, her bond is purchased by Anafiel Delaunay, a nobleman with very a special mission...and the first one to recognize who and what she is: one pricked by Kushiel's Dart, chosen to forever experience pain and pleasure as one.

Phèdre is trained equally in the courtly arts and the talents of the bedchamber, but, above all, the ability to observe, remember, and analyze. Almost as talented a spy as she is courtesan, Phèdre stumbles upon a plot that threatens the very foundations of her homeland. Treachery sets her on her path; love and honor goad her further. And in the doing, it will take her to the edge of despair...and beyond. Hateful friend, loving enemy, beloved assassin; they can all wear the same glittering mask in this world, and Phèdre will get but one chance to save all that she holds dear.

Set in a world of cunning poets, deadly courtiers, heroic traitors, and a truly Machiavellian villainess, this is a novel of grandeur, luxuriance, sacrifice, betrayal, and deeply laid conspiracies. Not since Dune has there been an epic on the scale of Kushiel's Dart-a massive tale about the violent death of an old age, and the birth of a new.

Giveaway:
One person will win one of the above books of their choice (depending on if they are old enough for those that have age restrictions) of the format of their choice as long as it's available in their country.
Open internationally
You must be13 or older to enter except when it says otherwise.
This giveaway ends June 30th.
I reserve the right to erase any suspect entries (if you enter more than once with different names.  Rafflecopter DOES record the IP addresses.)

Review: A Want So Wicked by Suzanne Young

A Want So Wicked (A Need So Beautiful #2) by Suzanne Young
Hardcover, 288 pgs.
Expected publication: June 26th, 2012 by Balzer+Bray
Source: Publisher

Elise is a normal seventeen-year-old girl until the day she wakes up in a desert park, with no idea who she is.

After that episode, her life takes a bizarre turn. She’s experiencing unexpected flashes of insight into people’s lives—people she’s never met before. Strangers frighten her with warnings about the approaching Shadows. And although Elise has never had a boyfriend, she suddenly finds herself torn between two handsome but very different young men: Abe, the charming bad boy whose effect on her both seduces and frightens her, and the mysterious Harlin, who’s new to town but with whom Elise feels an urgent, elemental connection—almost as if they are soul mates.

Now Elise begins to question everything about her life. Why do these guys both want her so desperately? What are the Shadows? Why does the name Charlotte inspire a terrifying familiarity? And who is Elise, really?

This is the second book in this series by Suzanne Young and it's a mix of sequel and companion.  You could go into it without reading A Need So Beautiful, but I don't advise doing so because you'd be seriously missing out.   Both books are absolutely fabulous and if you haven't started the series, do so, right now!

Those of you who read the first book can probably gather quite a lot just from that description.  But if you're like me it mostly brought about a sense of relief, right?  Well, I'll just say that I was very satisfied with this one and where, and how, it went.  As a matter of fact I may have liked it more.  Though maybe that's just because I just read it and I read ANSB over a year ago and the memory has faded a bit.

This one had a tad bit different feel.  There was more of a focus on the Shadows and less on the Need.  As a matter of fact the Need was very backseat.  If I were to complain about anything it would be that I wanted more of the Need.  I felt like Elise needed to experience it more.  However, that's a very minor complaint.

Harlin fans, you will not be disappointed!  I think that his brief scenes in the beginning really set up a fantastic bit of tension that definitely delivered later in the book.  I love that tension, it just makes everything so much better!  And there were some great other characters in this one, but my favorite was Elise's dad.  He's a pastor and has a strong sense of right and has his rules, but he allows his daughters to make their own decisions as to what they believe and whatnot.  He's strict, but not.  And he's there for them, no matter what!  I loved that!

This is a super fast read but I think it covered things quite well.  It's like it got to the meat of the story without anything being drawn out.  I do think I would have appreciated just a bit more with the whole Need thing, like I mentioned before, but that's it.  It also had a fantastic ending, one that left me feeling quite satisfied.  Loved this book!

ebook Giveaway: The Tube Riders by Chris Ward

The Tube Riders by Chris Ward
Mega Britain in 2075 is a dangerous place. A man known only as the Governor rules the country with an iron hand, but within the towering perimeter walls of London Greater Urban Area anarchy spreads unchecked through the streets.

In the abandoned London Underground station of St. Cannerwells, a group of misfits calling themselves the Tube Riders seek to forget the chaos by playing a dangerous game with trains. Marta is their leader, a girl haunted by her brother’s disappearance. Of the others, Paul lives only to protect his little brother Owen, while Simon is trying to hold on to his relationship with Jess, daughter of a government official. Guarding them all is Switch, a man with a flickering eye and a faster knife, who cares only about preserving the legacy of the Tube Riders. Together, they are family.

Everything changes the day they are attacked by a rival gang. While escaping, they witness an event that could bring war down on Mega Britain. Suddenly they are fleeing for their lives, pursued not only by their rivals, but by the brutal Department of Civil Affairs, government killing machines known as Huntsmen, and finally by the inhuman Governor himself.

Review: Team Human by Justine Larbalestier & Sarah Rees Brennan

Team Human by Justine Larbalestier & Sarah Rees Brennan
Hardcover, 344 pgs
Expected Publication: July 3rd, 2012 by HarperTeen
Source: Amazon Vine

Just because Mel lives in New Whitby, a city founded by vampires, doesn’t mean she knows any of the blood-drinking undead personally. They stay in their part of town; she says in hers. Until the day a vampire shows up at her high school. Worse yet, her best friend, Cathy, seems to be falling in love with him. It’s up to Mel to save Cathy from a mistake she might regret for all eternity!

On top of trying to help Cathy (whether she wants it or not), Mel is investigating a mysterious disappearance for another friend and discovering the attractions of a certain vampire wannabe. Combine all this with a cranky vampire cop, a number of unlikely romantic entanglements, and the occasional zombie, and soon Mel is hip-deep in an adventure that is equal parts hilarious and touching.

A delightful read with a mix of hilarity and serious with characters that will send you into fits of giggles while still touching your heart as you feel for them and the struggles they face.

I went into Team Human without expectations other than I thought it would be funny.  And funny it was!  Trust me, I did my share of snorting.  But I wasn't expecting the more serious tone that was there as well.  They managed to mix the two so it was still a light hearted and fun read, but with a fantastic story that you can take somewhat seriously (not too much though ;). Have you read either of these authors?  Or maybe chatted with them online a bit?  Well, I had a decent idea for their personalities, and this book was so them!  They made what is a bit over the top and slightly ridiculous and turned into a real story, a real interesting story at that!

I devoured this book quite quickly, it kept me pulled in and moved at a fast pace.  There wasn't any slow parts, but things never got too busy either.  Mel is a fantastic character with a hilarious inner voice and is the queen of snark.  She says what's on her mind and doesn't give it a whole lot of thought.  She's Team Human, and that's THAT, and she just thinks everyone should accept that.  My issues with Mel were minor but there were a few.  I didn't fully understand her aversion to vampires.  There's an explanation with her friend and her father and all this junk, but I didn't think it was a good enough reason for her to have such strong feelings about it.  However, I can chalk it all up to being that she's just not fond of them because they're creepy, and dead and they drink blood from people.  I also felt like she overreacted to things a lot.  Now that's kind of a point in this story, and so I can't really find fault with it too much.

Another minor issue is that Cathy and Francis 'fall in love' in like no time at all!  Now they are secondary characters, but they are vitally important to the story.  I didn't love that they fell in love so quickly and I didn't quite get how it happened, but once again, it's just how this story works, it's a bit slightly ridiculous so the over the top scenario's like that one aren't as much of an issue as they normally would be.

I loved Kit.  He has this fantastic personality that really pops.  He's really a great side kick for Mel as their personalities just go together well.  There's just a slight problem with Kit (for Mel) and it makes her attraction to him something she just wants to deny.  I don't want to give any spoilers, but I had to point out Kit and his awesome personality.  His and Mel's banter had me in fits of giggles.  Fits, I tell you!

The best part of the book (and the funniest) is the characters and their banter.  They love and they hate and they just have so many darn strong feelings about everything and they turn everything into a slightly ridiculous but highly hilarious situation.  I really loved reading about them even when they were annoying.  This is one book where annoying was kind of okay.

I most definitely recommend this to those who want a book that they don't need to take too seriously.  One with plenty of laughs that still provides a somewhat deep and compelling story.  This was a hoot from page one and I hope you'll give it a chance yourself!

Wicked Wildfire Read-a-Thon Update Page

This Read-a-Thon is Hosted by: Rebecca @ Kindle Fever, April @ My Shelf Confessions.

As per Rebecca's Blog, here is the info:
The Wicked Wildfire Read-A-Thon is a time when we all get together to dedicate the days of June 20-24 to as much reading as possible. You read as much as you can in order to get yourself a little further through that huge to-read pile! We know real life gets in the way and even if you can’t participate more than one day, you’re welcome to join in on the fun!
In the meanwhile, we will be hosting book-related challenges where you can win some awesome prizes and have a Twitter party at the hashtag #WWReadathon! You can posts updates on your blog, Twitter, Goodreads or Facebook — as long as the profile is public and we all can enjoy your reading progress!

One thing I like about read-a-thons is that it's my chance to take down those books that have been on my shelf for ages and get a few of them read.  Because I like to feel like I'm getting a lot read, I tend to pick YA books and ones that are smaller in size.  It's hard to know which books I'll read but here are a few I'm hoping to get to.

I plan to start with Ten Miles Past Normal by Frances O'Roarke Dowell

And then in no particular order I hope to read:
Whisper by Phoebe Kitanidis

My Soul to Save by Rachel Vincent

I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You & Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy by Ally Carter

Updates:
Finished Ten Miles Past Normal
Finished I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You

Thursday evening:
I've been suffering from an attention disorder.  I've read a bit on three different books and am seriously considering picking up another.  I read about 50 pages from Shadow Kin by M.J. Scott, about 15 pages of My Soul to Save and am about halfway through Duplicity by Nikki Jefford.  So I have at least made progress in one of those.   I got Smart Girls Get What They Want by Sarah Strohmeyer in the mail today and am really wanting to start reading it now.  Too many books I'm dying to read!

Friday afternoon:
Finished Duplicity last night.
Started Smart Girls Get What They Want

Not sure if I'll get much reading done today.  Too much going on.  The weekend will be the same.

Saturday:
Finished Smart Girls Get What They Want by Sarah Strohmeyer
Read first half of Spark by Amy Kathleen Ryan

Read a total of  4 books, though with reading on several others it probably is a total of 5.

Blog Tour for Tin Swift by Devon Monk w/ Giveaway!

Today we have an amazing post up as part of the Tin Swift Tour.  Tin Swift is the second book in The Age of Steam series by Devon Monk. I really enjoyed Dead Iron and can't wait to read more! I am so privileged as to be the very first stop on this epic tour.  You know why it's epic? Because we get a first hand look at this short story.  Here, I'll let Devon explain:

HANG FIRE is a steampunk short story set in late 1800's America. It takes place between the Age of Steam book #1, DEAD IRON and book #2 TIN SWIFT. The story is broken into 20 "chapters" and posted, one chapter at a time, on 20 awesome blogs. To read the whole story, start at chapter 1 at www.candacesbookblog.com (that's here!) and follow the "read the next chapter" links at the end of the post.

Sounds awesome right?  Well here goes!

HANG FIRE - Chapter 1

They were being followed. Cedar Hunt thumbed the gear at the edge of his goggles, flipping a darker lens into place. He scanned the high, rocky hills, looking for a glint of sun off a gun barrel, listening for the shift of horse and leather against the scrub here on the eastern curve of the Oregon territory.
His curse would do him no good today. The beast the Pawnee had planted in his bones only came out at the full moon, and was no more than an unsettled anger now.
Still, it might be a fair bit easier to hear if an ambush were imminent if the Madder brother’s wagon wasn’t making enough noise for an entire troupe of tinkers. At least the brothers weren’t drunk and singing. Yet.
“Trouble, Mr. Hunt?” Alun, the eldest Madder called out over the clatter of oddments stashed inside the big wagon pulled by their two draft horses.
“Not that I see,” he answered.
All three of the brothers were miners. Short, bearded, bull-shouldered and tougher than the mountains they blasted their way through. They were rich too, from all the silver they dug out of Hallelujah, though a man wouldn’t know it from the state of their clothing or belongings.
But only a fool would mistake them for anything other than clever. They had an eye for the Strange, a knack for measuring a man’s soul, and a way with the wild sciences that had gotten Cedar out of–and into–too many tight spots.
He’d made them a promise to find a very dangerous weapon. Of course, he’d made a lot of promises lately.
“Mr. Hunt?” a softer voice called out.
Mae Lindson, the beautiful, sad-eyed widow urged the mule she was riding up ahead of the Madder’s wagon so she could better talk to him. He’d promised to take her to the coven of her witch sisters, off Kansas way. He hoped to do so before she lost her mind to the madness the sisters had set upon her.
At the sight of her, his heart hammered hard and reckless. She was a need he’d found no fix for, a thirst he couldn’t quench. And his desire had only grown stronger all their days on the trail.
“Mrs. Lindson,” he said as she stopped just short of a comfortable distance. “Where’s Rose?”
Rose Small, the young woman who rode with them looking for adventure in the big cities beyond the small town of Hallelujah was often at Mae’s side. Even horseback, Rose tended to occupy herself with a bit of metal, cog and spring, making whimsical curiosities of metal. She had a deviser’s quick fingers and quicker mind.
“I don’t know,” Mae said, her eyes gone cloudy with concern. “Rose disappeared.”

Review: Arise by Tara Hudson

Arise (Hereafter #2) by Tara Hudson
Hardcover, 404 pages
Published June 5th, 2012 by Harper Collins
Source: Publisher *for review*

Description from goodreads:
Amelia—still caught between life and death—must fight for every moment of her relationship with the human boy Joshua. They can hardly even kiss without Amelia accidentally dematerializing. Looking for answers, they go to visit some of Joshua’s Seer relatives in New Orleans. But even in a city so famously steeped in the supernatural, Amelia ends up with more questions than answers…and becomes increasingly convinced that she and Joshua can never have a future together.Wandering through the French Quarter, Amelia meets other in-between ghosts, and begins to seriously consider joining them. And then she meets Gabrielle. Somehow, against impossible odds, Gaby has found a way to live a sort of half-life...a half-life for which Amelia would pay any price. Torn between two worlds, Amelia must choose carefully, before the evil spirits of the netherworld choose for her.
Last year I read and reviewed Hereafter and I know I enjoyed the book.  But there were maybe a few minor issues that made it not quite a 5 star book for me.  Those issues weren't issues so much in this one.  And I think I enjoyed it a bit more with the insta-love in the past now and having gotten use to the whole ghost thing.

This was a fast read for me as there weren't any parts that really lagged, it felt pretty constant and was easy to cruise through.  I loved the setting of New Orleans and I loved some new characters that were introduced, especially Gaby with her strong personality.  I really like Josh but he's never been a character that really POPPED for me, you know?  There's nothing wrong with him, but maybe he's just a bit one dimensional for me.  Amelia is a pretty great character and she didn't do a bunch of stuff to annoy me like I was thinking she might.  You know the whole, I love him but I need to protect him thing where they run away but then can't stay away, etc?  She didn't NOT do that, but she didn't do it quite the way I expected and it wasn't annoying so much.  Okay, I'm babbling, but her not being a totally annoying character is a bonus, right?

There were a few things that felt a bit far fetched but the fact that voodoo was involved kind of made it okay.  It's like, things that shouldn't be possible can be possible with voodoo.  Or something... I don't know, but while a little voice kind of giggled at the far fetched bits it wasn't something that really bothered me much.  And it was needed for the plot of this book.  It made it better, in my opinion.  And I'm most definitely anxious for more!

Feature & Follow Friday- I'm a Feature!

Feature & Follow Friday is hosted by alisoncanread.com & parajunkee.com.  This week I'm the featured blogger (YAY!).  Check out my answers below then go check out the hosts as well as the other featured blog before hopping along to visit everyone else!  Thanks Rachel and Alison for the awesome FF!  (Also, I have no preference how you follow.  GFC, Linky, RSS, or email is fine with me!

When did you start blogging?
I started my blog back in December of 2008. I started it mostly as a way to chronicle my reading and keep track. Soon after my baby was born and I pretty much took a year long break. I've been blogging consistently since early 2010.

What is your favorite part of book blogging?
Doing what I love. Reading, hanging out with book people and getting to know authors. Really, there's not a downside other than it gets time consuming, but really, once I find my middle ground it's amazing!

What is your favorite book(s)?
Yikes. I know everyone has a hard time with this question. But the one series that I have consistently stuck with as a favorite is Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's series. This is actually three different trilogies. Phedre's is the first and my favorite, but the other two trilogies are absolutely amazing as well. This is an adult (most definitely adult!) fantasy series and I VERY highly recommend it. It's heavy reading, but worth every single moment. I really want to go on and on trying to convince you to read it, but I'll stop there. Just read it, kay? And one series I have to mention is The River of Time series by Lisa Bergren. This is YA but appropriate for everyone. It's a series that adults and teens alike love. Don't let the fact that Lisa Bergren is a Christian writer stop you, this does not read like Christian fiction. It's just a clean read, but with plenty of hot guys and lots of battle scenes.

What has been the best thing that has happened to you because of book blogging?
The friends I've made. I've made so many friends blogging and these are not just 'online friends' they are true friends who are there for me when I need them. Anytime, any day.

Q: Happy Father's Day! Who is your favorite dad character in a book and why?
I'm actually going to go with Elise's dad from A Want So Wicked by Suzanne Young.  He's a pastor and has strong ideals, but he doesn't force things upon his daughters.  He lets them choose.  He's a good father in that he's there for them no matter what, even if he doesn't always feel happy with their decisions.

I hope you'll stop by my collaborative blog as well.  This blog is run by several bloggers and is pretty new still, we'd love to have you check it out! It's Novels, News & Notes From Your Northwest Neighbors.

Review: Something Like Normal by Trish Dollar

Something Like Normal by Trish Dollar
Hardcover, 224 pgs.
Expected publication: June 19th, 2012 by Bloomsbury
Source: Netgalley/Bloomsbury
When Travis returns home from a stint in Afghanistan, his parents are splitting up, his brother’s stolen his girlfriend and his car, and he’s haunted by nightmares of his best friend’s death. It’s not until Travis runs into Harper, a girl he’s had a rocky relationship with since middle school, that life actually starts looking up. And as he and Harper see more of each other, he begins to pick his way through the minefield of family problems and post-traumatic stress to the possibility of a life that might resemble normal again. Travis’s dry sense of humor, and incredible sense of honor, make him an irresistible and eminently lovable hero.

Something Like Normal was a book that I was dying to read after I saw that people were absolutely raving about it.  And I have to say, I am so glad I did!  It completely blew me away and was a book I completely fell in love with.

Now, if you haven't read that description please go back and do so.  Is there anything that really stands out to you?  I can't say that much did for me.  Yeah, it sounds good but not absolutely incredible.  But it was, trust me.  Travis was a character that felt real to me.  His typical guy bit as well as his sense of honor (yes, that bit is in the description!) that really starts to shine through as the book goes on.  He's had to deal with a lot and he's struggling, but he really starts to find his way in this book.  As he struggles with his friends death and post traumatic stress he's also dealing with his awful father and his mother who's been broken by her husbands douche-bag ways and ideas. At the same time he's falling for Harper who was an absolute gem.  I was a little surprised she was willing to give him the time of day after I heard of the awful things he did (or said) way back (even though he didn't really) but she's very forgiving and I felt like she saw through him and saw all the good he had stored up inside when so many others didn't really.  Not even himself.

This book is definitely aimed at more mature readers (high school, not middle school) as the main character is in the Marines (so a bit of cursing) and there's lots of talk about sex (fade out, no description).  It wasn't anything that bothered me, it all felt important to the story and made it more authentic.  I just want a warning there for the younger readers.

I very highly recommend this book to mature YA readers as well as adults.  This is a book that boys would likely enjoy as well as long as they can look past the kissing on the cover.  It was a fast read and full of beauty that you surely don't want to miss!

Disclosure:  I received a copy of this book for review purposes.  All opinions expressed are my own and I was not paid or influenced in any way.
This book qualifies for the YA Contemporary Challenge 2012.
