QUESTIONS:
There’s significance to Mara and Noah’s initials when put together. Were their initials planned entirely in advance, or were they something you noticed had potential when writing and thereby adjusted their names accordingly?
It depends what you mean by "in advance."
Mara was Mara before I even put pen to paper, but I initially planned for Noah's last name to be Dyer (an homage to Troy Dyer, of Reality Bites fame – one of my favorite characters ever).
But a few chapters into the story, it just wasn't working for Noah, so I tacked it onto Mara's name and, boom, it fit. Noah inherited his last name before I was halfway through the first draft of The Unbecoming, in July 2009, and Mara inherited her middle name at about the same time; I didn't realize what their initials spelled out until I was writing notes for my first revision and they were staring me in the face.
Sometimes, your books are kind enough to give you gifts.
