Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring…. until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something…unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don’t kill him first, that is.

I wanted to read this one purely because of the rave reviews. I had a vague idea of what it was about but I’m not sure I ever read the actual description. And if I had I might not have read the book. The reason: infuriating hot guy who is so not nice. That right there tells me this will be a constant back and forth of ‘I love him/her, I hate him/her’. And it was. But guess what?! I didn’t hate it! I was shocked. Like seriously, that is one thing I normally hate. But it was pulled off in this one. Not that I loved that aspect of it, but it worked.

I’m sure many of you (most of you) are aware that Katy is a book blogger. She loves books and she loves to blog about them. It’s not an important aspect of the story but it’s neat to hear when she’s writing up an In My Mailbox or has to get her Waiting on Wednesday post done. It’s kind of like Jennifer’s little shout out to us bloggers or something. Plus it gives us another level to connect with Katy. And I did like Katy. She rarely made me angry and frustrated and she likes books! Okay, so she’s loyal, brave and totally a great person as well ;)

Now Daemon… well, I guess I’ll use the same saying that many others have and it’s getting kind of old but really– Holy Hotness! He is one droolworthy dude! I know that half (or more) is the mannerisms as well that make him oh-so-yummy, but he won me over! Oh, until he was a total jerkwad! But then he’d do something accidentally sweet and well… drooling may have commenced. I should have hated him. I really should have. But I just couldn’t. Sorry.

The story itself was fast paced, the other characters were perfect, whether we loved them or hated them they played their roles great. I love Dee, Daemons sister and Katy’s best friend. Such an amazing person and perfect friend. I wish she was my next door neighbor… I thought the story itself wasn’t terribly unique in many aspects, but she threw in aliens instead. But it was such an engrossing read that I guess I didn’t care.

So in conclusion- this isn’t a book I should have liked. It had too many things I normally hate. But I loved it! So I guess give it a try even if you don’t think it’s your thing. You may be surprised!

  1. Great review! That’s pretty awesome that Katy is a blogger. I haven’t come across a book that has a book blogger for a character before. Sounds interesting. I’m not normally a fan of alien books, but I think I’ll give this a try!

  2. I loved that Katy was a blogger, it was fun to see all the familiar memes and connect with her over her love of books and her blog! I was hoping Daemon’s a-holeness wouldn’t bother me in this one, but it did. I just couldn’t get on board with him! That is, until the very end and there were several scenes from his POV and they were super helpful in getting me to love him a little bit. I almost wish we got a dual perspective through the whole story because I would have been all about him a lot sooner if we had:) Can’t wait for book 2 now!

  3. I love when a book manages to surprise you, so I’m so glad you found one of those! I’m super curious about this one myself, but I usually like that ‘no nice hot guys’ and love/hate relationships. I really need to give this a try soon. Also, It’s so cool she’s a book blogger! Lol. Great review!

  4. I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about this one and I have yet to read it, but I just ordered a copy a few days ago so hopefully it’ll be here soon. I can’t wait to read it. Awesome review!

  5. This is exactly why I can’t WAIT to start this one!!! I’m TOTALLY hoping it will do the same for me!!! I KNOW it’s going to be filled with things I normally wouldn’t go for- but EVERYONE loves it!!!

  6. I started this and got distracted. I wasn’t thrilled with the overly-antagonistic beginning (not sure why–I usually love this in romance) but I’m definitely going to have to pick it up again.

  7. im so glad you didnt listen to your inner self and read this book!!!! this book was so good and i totally loved it! i wasnt big on aliens but man i could use some Daemon in my life!!!!!! great review!!!!

  8. Holy Hotness and all the droolworthiness makes me want to read Obsidian, but I’m still on the fence. I really enjoyed Half-Blood by Armentrout, but this one just sounds so…blah, I guess.

I like interesting and unique, and this one just seems to ‘stick to the script’ for me. If I have time, I might pick it up, but I think I’ll hold off. At least for now.

  9. Oh I’m so in love with this book! I think it was fantastic and I found it funny that the MC was a Boog Blogger , so cute!!
I loved Daemon – I know he was a arrogant jerk but his character was awesome! I can’t wait to read the next one!

  10. I’m really going to have to read Jennifer’s books. I never hear bad things about them. So happy you loved it. It sounds like a lot of fun!

  11. I love Jennifer’s Half-Blood series so I’m so excited Angela gave me this book for X-mas.

I’m glad that you were able to enjoy it even though there were some elements that you normally hate. I hope you continue to read her work because I think she is awesome.

Thanks for the great review, I can’t wait to read this one.
