The Mortal War is over, and Clary Fray is back home in New York, excited about all the possibilities before her. She's training to become a Shadowhunter and to use her unique power. Her mother is getting married to the love of her life. Downworlders and Shadowhunters are at peace at last. And—most important of all—Clary can finally call Jace her boyfriend.
But nothing comes without a price.
Someone is murdering the Shadowhunters who used to be in Valentine’s Circle, provoking tensions between Downworlders and Shadowhunters that could lead to a second bloody war. Clary’s best friend, Simon, can’t help her. His mother just found out he’s a vampire and now he’s homeless. Everywhere he turns, someone wants him on their side—along with the power of the curse wrecking his life. And they’re willing to do anything to get what they want. At the same time he’s dating two beautiful, dangerous girls—neither of whom knows about the other.
When Jace begins to pull away from Clary without explaining why, she is forced to delve into the heart of a mystery whose solution reveals her worst nightmare: She herself has set in motion a terrible chain of events that could lead to her losing everything she loves. Even Jace.
Love. Blood. Betrayal. Revenge. The stakes are higher than ever in City of Fallen Angels.
I pre-ordered this book WAY back before it came out so I'm not sure why it sat on my shelves for over half a year before I picked it up. I guess because it was such a long time ago since I read the first three I just didn't have as strong of an urge to pick it up. But I decided it was beyond time to do so and the second I started reading it my eyes hardly left the pages. I've thought I've read some engrossing books recently, but once I started this I realized that compared to this book they were hardly engrossing at all! I seriously was in love the second I started reading. And I was a bit surprised cause although I liked the first three books I didn't love them. They were good, really good even, but not this good!
Were the characters this good in the first three? Because I was totally loving the characters in this one. Simon was one that really stood out more to me though. And a new character that's introduced could easily steal the show, loved him! And while as I was reading the book I really loved Clary and Jace when I look back I see some things that maybe do bother me just a little. Jace was a bit angsty (more then usual) and I guess it was a bit annoying. But his and Simons banter was totally awesome! I loved the character interaction in this book. Totally entertaining!
I thought the plot was pretty awesome and I wasn't really able to figure things out. I remember thinking that some things were a little crazy or maybe a bit unnecessary, but they didn't stick with me so I guess it wasn't a real issue. The one thing I did have an issue with and it's a big issue really, is the end. It felt like things were going to wrap up but then the author added a couple more pages and ended the book with a totally insane cliffhanger. Like so insane I did not sleep. That last scene just ran through my head all night long. I dreamed the scene over and over again. She should have just left it out because while the whole time I was reading the book (until those last pages) I was wanting to scream to the world about how amazing the book was. I wanted to go to the bookstore and tell every single person to read this book. But then I read those pages and I wanted to throw the book. It totally left what was an amazing book with a bad taste in my mouth. It's two freaking pages! Can I really knock stars off for those two pages? Well, I feel bad but I think I have to. Maybe I'll just knock it down half a star and rate it 4.5/5 but beware of the cliffhanger. Thank goodness I waited to read it, at least now my wait isn't as long now.
4.5/5 stars

In all honesty, this one disappointed me, but I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it! I do know what you mean about Simon though. He's one of the reasons why I haven't given up on this series!
I stopped after her first 3 books..and have had no desire to read her other ones. I have heard mixed reviews on this continutation of this series.
I understand when a book is just ruined at the end :)
I agree with Natalie ...I loved Simon too.
I bought this one last week still haven't read it yet - glad to hear it's so good! I LOVED the Mortal Instruments series. Not sure about the cliffhanger - I really hate cliffhangers. But like you I guess I'm also reading it late and don't have to wait as long! :)
I have yet to read the third book in this series. I agree with you that so far the series has been good, great even, but I'm not in love yet. Many people have told me the third book is the best so I guess I shall have to catch up on this series soon.
I'm sorry you were disappointed in those last two pages.
Thanks for the great review! :)
Mortal Instrument is the one series that I fail to read every time I think I will read this series next. Sounds like an awesome book with well built characters and plot.
LOL I know, right??? That cliffhanger was an absolute killer! That's one reason why I think I should have waited until closer to the release date of City of Lost Souls to read this like you sort of did LOL... but it probably wouldn't have lasted that long anyway! x)
Awesome review, Candace!!! :) I'm super happy that you loved this book more than the first three books! Now you can join the insanely large waiting group for CoLS! ;)
Yay for loving it so much. Boo for those two pages! I really need to give this series another try.
I don't think I've read this one (I should know this, right? But the covers and titles all kind of blend together for me and I don't read them in order...sigh) but, if/when I do, I'll wait until the next one's out because I HATE CLIFFHANGERS!! I mean, come on people. If I like your book, I'm GOING to read the next one. Don't tick me off by leaving me hanging for a year. /rant :)
