MFT Guest: Interview with Ellen Connor and Giveaway of Nightfall (2 winners & open INT!) ENDED

This Giveaway has ended
Today I have Ellen Connor on for My Favorite Things. Ellen Connor is actually comprised of two people, Carrie Lofty and Ann Aguirre. They have a brand new book out called NIGHTFALL and in this interview you'll learn a bit more about the book!

About NIGHTFALL:
Their instincts will save them.Their passion will transform them.Growing up with an unstable, often absent father who preached about the end of the world, Jenna never thought, in her wildest nightmares, that his predictions would come true. Or that he would have a plan in place to save her–one that includes the strong, stoic man who kidnaps and takes her to a remote cabin in the Pacific Northwest.
The mysterious ex-Marine named Mason owes a life-debt to Jenna’s father. Skilled and steadfast, he’s ready for the Change, but Jenna proves tough to convince. Until the power grid collapses and the mutant dogs attack–vicious things that reek of nature gone wrong.
When five strangers appear, desperate to escape the bloodthirsty packs, Jenna defies her protector and rescues them. As technology fails and the old world falls away, Jenna changes too, forever altered by supernatural forces. To fight for their future, she and Mason must learn to trust their instinctive passion–a flame that will see them through the bitter winter, the endless nights, and the violence of a new Dark Age.
Hmmm, this sounds like a must read to me!  I live in the Pacific NW, so that's a bonus!

Thanks for joining us for My Favorite Things Ellen! To stick with the My Favorite Things theme can you tell us three of your favorite things that are included in NIGHTFALL?
Hunky guy would have to be at the top of the list, because not much else about the apocalypse is particularly fabulous. But with the hunky guy comes two other favorite things: survival and hot sex! I guess the hot sex takes it to a little notch above survival, because there's barely eeking by and then there's doing it with a studly, angsty, skilled lover by your side!

Who was your favorite character to write in NIGHTFALL?
Mason. I wrote him, while Ann wrote our heroine. But we also split secondary characters who will get their own books (Chris in MIDNIGHT this September, and Tru in DAYBREAK this December). Their contributions to NIGHTFALL were as much a sneak peek for us as writers as it will be for readers--just a taste of the men they would become. But for now, in this story, it was all Mason for me. He's such a good guy underneath all the pain! He deserved happiness after such a rough life.

Where (or what from) do you draw your inspiration?
I think I can speak for Ann on this as well, that although we're both inspired by many things--from music to poetry--our inspiration for the "Dark Age Dawning" trilogy came from films. We share a love for Pitch Black, 28 Days Later,"Doctor Who," "Battlestar Galactica," and of course the sources of our namesakes: Aliens and The Terminator. All of these movies or television shows have strong heroines and a serious romantic thread. We need both in our vision of an apocalyptic future!

What keeps you going when you're having a hard time writing?
Deadlines. Whether official or self-imposed, there's no getting around them when working with a writing partner. And frankly, I wouldn't be a writer if I didn't chomp at the bit to write new words everyday. The stories need to come out!

What are your top 3 places to visit?
That I have visited, or that I'd to visit? For "visited," I'd suggest the Riviera Maya in Mexico, Le Marche in Italy, and the inside of Windsor Castle. I got to stay overnight there once because the mother of a friend of ours worked for the Queen! As for "want to visit," I'd love to see Salzburg, the Big Hole in Kimberley, South Africa, and Las Vegas--a revisit, since I was thirteen the last time I was there!

When your naming your favorite authors or book titles what are the top 5 you mention?
I'll just stick with authors, then you all can discuss favorite individual titles! I adore Loretta Chase, Laura Kinsale, Penelope Williamson, Candace Proctor (CS Harris), and Megan Chance. They're all on my classics list. Newer authors include Victoria Dahl, Courtney Milan, Sherry Thomas, Meredith Duran, and Megan Hart.

What can we expect to see from you in the future?
MIDNIGHT in September and DAYBREAK in December will round out the "Dark Age Dawning" trilogy. Then we'll have to see where fate takes Ellen Connor next!

We'd like to give away two copies of NIGHTFALL. Just let us know your favorite version of an apocalyptic future. Movie? Book? Share with us, please!

Book Review: Moonglass by Jessi Kirby

Title: Moonglass
Author: Jessi Kirby
Details: Hardcover, 224 pgs.
Published: May 3rd, 2011 by Simon & Schuster Childrens publishing
Reading Level: Young Adult
Source: Amazon Vine

Description:
From Jessi Kirby, a debut novel about confronting the past in order to move ahead.
I read once that water is a symbol for emotions. And for a while now, I've thought maybe my mother drowned in both.
Anna's life is upended when her father accepts a job transfer the summer before her junior year. It's bad enough that she has to leave her friends and her life behind, but her dad is moving them to the beach where her parents first met and fell in love- a place awash in memories that Anna would just as soon leave under the surface. While life on the beach is pretty great, with ocean views and one adorable lifeguard in particular, there are also family secrets that were buried along the shore years ago. And the ebb and flow of the ocean's tide means that nothing- not the sea glass that she collects on the sand and not the truths behind Anna's mother's death- stays buried forever.

This is a young adult contemporary book and I was expecting to like it, but I wasn't expecting this.  This book is beautifully wrote but in very simple words.  I didn't find it flowery, but yet it was still just gorgeous.  Of course some of that may have been because the descriptions were so well done I could see, smell and hear the beach myself.  I could fill the mist on my face, and the sound of the surf.   This author had the ability to transport us into the story 100%.  I had a very difficult time putting this book down.

It's not only her descriptions that suck you in, but the characters.  I read a lot of books where I say I like the characters, but it's not real often that I really really love the characters.  But these characters were perfect.  Anna was very real and easy to imagine.  I liked her personality, I got her thought process, and I loved how she carried herself.  Every thought that went through her head, every action she followed through with, I got it.    Tyler was my kind of guy.  I never would have been brave enough to go after him as a teenager though.  He carries himself with confidence,  but yet he's a gentleman.  He respects Anna and the way that things play out seemed completely perfect.   I really loved their relationship and only wish we had more of him ;)

I loved that the author put in the love story but made it mostly uncomplicated.  This book is about Anna putting her past behind her as she learns more about her mother and comes to terms with her death and why it happened.  It's also about her relationship with her father which was another thing I thought played out perfect.  I thought it was all very realistic and I really felt it.  The love, the anger, the frustration.  All the emotions in this book were very strong, and well laid out.  And although the book is full of these emotions it wasn't at all depressing.

The setting of the book was perfect and that alone made it a perfect summer read.  But I think all the content within would put this at the top of a summer reading list.  It's perfect in so many ways!

This book was far beyond anything I expected.  I have to say I truly loved it and the second I finished I was telling people they MUST read it!  I'll definitely watch for anything else from this author.

MFT Guest: Maria Zannini and How I Learned to Love the Apocalypse and a Giveaway! *ENDED*

How I Learned to Love the Apocalypse

My post-apocalyptic series began with Touch Of Fire. Set 1200 years in the future, the apocalypse had faded from memoryLike pulling a thread from a tapestry, they retained only pieces of their history, distorting names of places and events like a half-remembered song.

In the sequel, Apocalypse Rising, my main characters time travel to the 21st century to escape certain death. But their retreat is bittersweet when they realize their presence could very well have started the clock ticking to Doomsday. It’s the end of the world as we know it, and the beginning of theirs.

Let’s face it, a real life, end-of-the-world apocalypse is kind of a downerBut I’d like to think there’s a bright side after every storm, so I want to tell you the Ten Best Things of Living in a Post-apocalyptic World.

10.  You know that report you were supposed to turn in to your boss next week? Fuggetaboutit. If you’re lucky, your boss will be eaten by zombies and his remains will befertilizing your vegetable garden.

9. No more sirens, traffic, or honking horns.

8.  No more spam telling you how you too can enlarge your penis, or urgent pleas from an exiled prince from Nigeria asking you to send him money.

7.  Food will taste better. The bad news: You’ll have to grow it yourself.

6.  You’ll see your kids more. The bad news: You’ll see your kids more.

5.  It’s true, there will be no more television. But it also means no more reality shows. :high five:

4.  There’s a 99% chance that if your mother-in-law lives more than a hundred miles away you’ll probably never see her again.

3. You can read to your heart’s content. The bad news: Unless you figure out how to connect your e-reader to a solar panel, you’ll have to read paper books.

2.  Consider yourself lucky if you’re within walking distance of a library. The books you take out have no return date.

And the Number One best thing about living in a post-apocalyptic world…

1. Those taxes you owed? You don’t owe them anymore. Same goes for your mortgage.

So enjoy the coming apocalypse. It’s not so bad.

Your turn: Can you think of any other benefits to a post apocalyptic world? Leave a comment for a chance to win the second book of my Elemental series, Apocalypse Rising.

Bio: Maria Zannini used to save the world from bad advertising, but now she spends her time wrangling chickens, and fighting for a piece of the bed against dogs of epic proportions. Occasionally, she writes novels.

Apocalypse Rising is the sequel to Touch Of Fire. I hope you’ll try them both.

It's my Birthday! And I'm Doing a Birthday Giveaway! (3 winners & INT) *ENDED*

One good thing about having another birthday is that I feel it's the one day a year that I don't have to feel guilty about indulging myself a little.  I use to always spend a day doing things I like, like going to Powells (bookstore) and trolling the aisles for hours on end, and going to a fancy (ish) restaurant and eating food I like and not food that the rest of my family wants.  But since I now have two small children it seems as though even finding a few hours to myself is nearly impossible.  So no me day, though if I'm lucky I'll get out of the house for a few hours this morning and perhaps visit the used bookstore and maybe even Borders.  Unfortunately I won't be able to trek to Powells as I'll have to be back by early afternoon.  However, I will be visiting there soon for a signing (or 3) and should probably try to save my birthday money for that.  If I get super lucky maybe my daughter will get invited for a play-date and I'll only have to deal with one whiny child for a few hours in the afternoon and no fighting.  No matter what the day ends up being like I know one thing, I got THE PLEDGE (it's for giveaway but I'm reading it first!) and I'm reading it on my birthday!  I don't think anything could beat that!

Now I was trying to come up with some unique idea for a giveaway and suddenly I got an idea (in the shower cause that's where my best ideas pop into my head)!  I'll giveaway books to three different people.  But they will be a surprise.  However, I have no desire to give books to people that may already have them or don't read that genre, etc.  So I came up with an idea.

I will giveaway 3 books to 3 different people.  These books may come off my shelf, or I may buy them new.  I can't afford to buy all three books so I'm hoping that everyone has a good wishlist to link me to, or can list AT LEAST 10 books they want.  These can be ANY books.  I will randomly select the winners using random. org.  I will contact the winners to get a mailing address, but I will not tell them what they won so that it can be a surprise.

The Giveaway: ENDED
3 books to 3 winners.  These may be books off my shelf (in at least excellent condition) or I may buy them (if your international I'll probably order you one).

MFT Guest: Diane Dooley posts about Romance at the End of the World and a Giveaway of Blue Galaxy *ENDED*

I’ve always loved dystopian and post-apocalyptic fiction. Maybe it was growing up during the Cold War, when the end of the world by mutually assured destruction was something that seemed like a definite possibility. Whether I was reading Orwell’s ‘1984’ or Atwood’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale; whether I was watching ‘Mad Max’ or ‘Bladerunner,’ the very concept seemed so real and immediate to me that I never had to suspend my disbelief.

When the world as you know it has gone or is being threatened, what effect that does that have on the individual? When you find yourself facing the worst of possible futures, what happens to love and romance?

In my sci-fi romance novella, Blue Galaxy, the planet Earth is a few decades past the point of no return. Environmental degradation and the resulting climate change has resulted in the planet no longer being able to feed its population. Starvation and malnutrition are endemic. Access to the dwindling food supplies are controlled by an aristocratic class who belong heart and soul to an all-powerful dictator. The only hope for the populace is emigration to far-flung colony planets, but the dictator controls emigration also.

What do people do under such circumstances? Is it still possible to fall in love when your planet is dying and your future is dying with it? My two main characters, Javan and Sola, react very differently and, as they both pursue their plans to survive, they manage to fall in love along the way.

Romance at the end of the world: when the stakes are this high, you’re not looking to live happily ever after. You’re just wondering if you have a future to look forward to at all.

I’ll be giving away a PDF copy of Blue Galaxy. Please tell me your thoughts on romance at the end of the world.

Blue Galaxy is available from Carina Press and most online bookstores.

The Day Before by Lisa Schroeder (Beach Video, and lots of pictures!)

Today is a big day!  It's the release day for The Day Before by Lisa Schroeder! WOO HOO!  I read this book a few months ago courtesy of Simon & Schuster Galley Grab and I actually read it twice in a row.  It's a fast read, only taking me about an hour, and I loved it so much that I flipped to the beginning and read it again!  Lisa Schroeder is a brilliant verse writer and so it's my pleasure to share a bit of this book.

Over this last weekend I went to Newport Oregon where the book takes place.  If you've read the book you'll understand, but if you haven't then I'll briefly fill you in.  The book takes place in several places in Newport.  One is the aquarium where they meet (jellyfish tank) and the beach.  They went some other places as well but this is going to be pic heavy enough as it is.

Not familiar with the book?  Here's the description:
Amber’s life is spinning out of control. All she wants is to turn up the volume on her iPod until all of the demands of family and friends fade away. So she sneaks off to the beach to spend a day by herself.  Then Amber meets Cade. Their attraction is instant, and Amber can tell he’s also looking for an escape. Together they decide to share a perfect day: no pasts, no fears, no regrets.
The more time that Amber spends with Cade, the more she’s drawn to him. And the more she’s troubled by his darkness. Because Cade’s not just living in the now—he’s living each moment like it’s his last.

A short review:
This is my favorite of Lisa Schroeders books so far.  I'm a huge fan and really hesitate to say it this, but I'm pretty certain that she blew me away even more with this book.  It was beautiful and planned out perfectly.  She left us guessing as to what it was the day before OF, with only hints thrown in for the first while.  We can finally piece it all together but still don't know EXACTLY what's going to go down.  We get the pieces at the perfect moments and it was brilliant.  The romance in this book was amazing.  I could just imagine all of it happening and it brought me back to when I was a teenager.
I love verse novels and I read  any I can find but Lisa's are my favorite.  Her technique, her writing style, the emotion she puts in, her characters... she has it all down perfect.  And when I read her books they inspire me to write.  I use to write ALL the time.  Now as a mom I tend to use my time to read because it's easier to deal with interruptions (which are frequent).  But when I read Lisa's books I tend to feel a strong need to get some of my own emotions out and to create my own stories.  So that is huge to me and I have to say a big thank you to Lisa for being able to write a book that moves me like that.
I, of course give this book the full 5/5 stars, but I would give it more if it were possible.

Here's a video from a beach near Newport Oregon where the book takes place:

Now I said I would be doing more videos but they didn't turn out very good so you'll have to settle for some pictures.
Yaquina Bay Bridge in Newport Oregon.  The aquarium is right on the other side of this bridge.

Starfish at the aquarium.

A seahorse.  It wouldn't hold still so it's head is a little blurry.

A stingray, also a bit blurry because it was moving so quickly.  They have tunnels you walk through so the water is all around you (except under your feet).

This tank of jellyfish was my favorite.
But this next one is from the tank where Amber and Cade actually see each other the first time (I believe).
This was just too cool of a picture not to share...

I have many many more awesome pictures so maybe we'll need to have a part two.  You know, if you want to see more ;)

Guest Post by Allison Winn Scotch

On Saturday I posted a giveaway for The One That I Want by Allison Winn Scotch.  And here is the lovely post wrote up by her and make sure you check out the giveaway for The One That I Want.  You can find it HERE.  Today is the release day for the paperback of this book so I hope you'll consider going out and buying a copy for yourself :)  But before I bore you to death here's Allison with a fabulous post.

When I talk to readers, which is my favorite thing about being an author, one of the most frequent questions I’m asked is, “Just how much of this book is based on your real life,” and the question always gives me pause because there are no concrete answers. While my initial inclination is to say that they’re not tied to my real life at all (after all – I’ve never traveled back in time or been given the ability to see into the future!), I also know that this inclination isn’t totally truthful. Because while the circumstances that my characters find themselves in have nothing to do with my own, I do think that if you’re really going to get to the emotional core of a character - and thus, hopefully write an honest book - somewhere, some part of you must relate to the journey that your characters take.

This was especially true with my second book, Time of My Life. The book chronicles the journey of Jillian, a discontent mom, who travels back in time to see if she’d have had a better shot at happiness if she’d done things differently, if her “what ifs” had actually transpired. Am I Jillian? No way, no how. But was even my husband a little nervous to read it? :) You betcha. Because while I don’t share a lot of her surface unhappiness – her endless days without adult stimulation with her toddler, her nostalgia for her old career, her struggle with forgiveness for her mother who abandoned her – I did understand the listlessness that was her undercurrent, that tugged her back toward the past. I experienced that listlessness in my 20s, and I was able to tap into it to write Jillian’s story. So while our circumstances are pretty starkly different, our emotional circumstances weren’t so far off – or at least they weren’t at one point. Now? I’m pretty content, though like everyone, I have my days. But back then? Discontentedness abounded. Am I making sense?

Which leads me to my new book, The OneThat I Want. I really enjoy chatting with readers about this one because Tilly, my heroine, is SO UNLIKE me that I very much struggled to find her voice and find that connection where I could say, “Oooh yes, that’s what we have in common. Now I can write you authentically.” Finally – after many months – I tapped in deeper to her problems, and I made her a little more angry, a little sharper, a little edgier, and then boom – we connected. I shaped a life that was very, very different than mine but still understood (I hope) how she’d react to her circumstances and hopefully, succeeded in creating a fully fleshed-out, emotive character.

That’s always my goal in writing. To write honestly. To tap into a difficult, vulnerable place and let that show on the page. To expose a sliver of myself without writing about my real life. Readers won’t always love the characters and might not even love what you put down on the page, but as long as their criticism isn’t about the emotional honesty or my attempts to create open characters who resonate, then I’m satisfied.

Which brings me back to my original paragraph: how much of these women are me? I guess it would be fair to say that there are fragments of me filtered throughout my books, like bread crumbs of my personality. Patch them all together, and you might see slices of my life, but mostly, my characters are their own people, and I wouldn’t be happy with my books if it were any other way.

MFT Guest: Kieryn Nicolas Interview and Giveaway

Today Kieryn Nicolas is on the blog talking about dystopia and her newest book Flawless Ruins.  Kieryn is a teenager herself and I have to say that she did a great job in creating a dystopian society.  But without further ado here is Kieryn (and a giveaway at the end!).

Before giving a book report on Inside Out by Maria Snyder, I’d never heard the word dystopia. After I finished presenting about the book in my freshman English class, however, my teacher mentioned how interesting the dystopia genre was and how intriguing the social commentaries were. I’m sorry to say I totally missed the next classmate who presented because my mind was already churning, deciding, oh, yeah, I’m totally writing a dystopia. Soon. Because seriously, how cool is that word? Dyyyystopia.Yeah, I actually thought that.

I do remember, during the science fiction week of a Young Writers Workshop I did a few summers ago, concocting societies with today’s societal flaws portrayed in an exaggerated manner. I didn’t know the word then (or maybe I forgot) but I’d loved the idea and after my book report I knew we had been stirring up dystopias. There, I decided, further proof I should write one.

My idea didn’t arrive until a few months later, when I was complaining about both the fictional and real worlds’ obsession with “perfect” love interests. “Half the books I checked out over break had pretty much the same guy. Just a different name and I think in one he was blond.” I’m sure writing perfect, why-aren’t-they-real? guys isn’t really a flaw in society, but as I complained I labeled it as such. And during this mini-tirade the idea for Flawless Ruins came into being.
Dystopias are awesome to read but I enjoyed writing one just as much. It probably won’t be my last, though my current manuscript is more of a contemporary (not sure how to classify it yet).

If you want to learn more (such as, more about me, or where to find Flawless Ruins—or Rain!) check out my website: www.kierynnicolas.com. Also, I blog Tuesdays at www.yalitsix.blogspot.com, and you can find me on Facebook!
