Today I have Michelle Madow on the blog. You may have seen Remembrance around the blogosphere (I know I've seen it EVERYWHERE!). This is your chance to find out more about it, the author behind it, and to win your own copy!
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your book?
Remembrance is the story of Lizzie Davenport, a seemingly normal high school junior—except for the fact that she has been reincarnated from Regency Era, England. However, she doesn’t remember anything about her past life until her soulmate Drew Carmichael transfers into her school and triggers her memories to gradually return to her. There are a lot of Pride and Prejudice parallels sprinkled throughout the story, which I had a lot of fun with since I’m a huge Jane Austen fan!
A little about me—I’m originally from Baltimore, moved to Florida for five years, and recently moved back to Baltimore to study Fiction Writing at Johns Hopkins University. I love my classes, but am missing the nice Florida weather and sunshine! Remembrance is my first novel, and I’m so happy to be able to share it with readers.
Can you sum up your book in 10 words?
Reincarnation, True Love, Destiny, Modern Fairy Tale, Friendship, Betrayal, Secrets!
What was your inspiration for Remembrance?
Remembrance was inspired by Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” music video. In the video, Taylor sees a guy while walking through campus, and the moment their eyes connect, the scene flashes to the two of them dancing at a beautiful ball dressed in clothes that appear to be from around the year 1815. After watching the video, the characters and story in Remembrance started to piece together in my mind. I started to write it down, and ended up with a finished novel!
Wow! That is pretty amazing! I don't think I've had an answer that clear before. Usually it's a mesh of different things. I love that story!
What was the biggest obstacle you had to overcome when writing it?
One of the first things I learned when starting to write was that finishing a novel requires a lot of discipline. It’s a long project with no immediate deadlines and no daily schedule, so I had to learn how to make myself sit down and write every day, even if I wasn’t in the mood to do so. I was always a big procrastinator with my homework, but writing a novel taught me how to schedule my time in a more efficient manner so I was able to complete the assignments I needed to get done and still have time to write.
Do you have to do any type of research?
So much! I wanted to make sure I got the historical details accurate, so I researched Regency Era clothing, customs, activities women did then, jewelry, etc. Also, all of the objects described in the book are real things I found online (like the music box and first edition of Pride and Prejudice.)
Do you like movie adaptations? Would you want your novel to turn into a movie?
I love movie adoptions, and think they’re a great way to get a story out to an even broader audience. I enjoy envisioning what actors would be best in different roles, and I’ve created an ideal casting list for Remembrance, which you can find on my blog by clicking here!
Names are very important to a story, but not always easy to come up with. How did you come up with the names of the characters in your story?
Lizzie parallels Lizzy from Pride and Prejudice, but since the two of them are individual characters, I changed the spelling to make it clear that Lizzie is her own person. I also liked that Lizzie is a shortened version of the British name Elizabeth, which is what she went by in her past life. Drew’s name originally came to me from Taylor Swift’s song “Teardrops on my Guitar,” but it also worked because it starts with a D (much like Mr. Darcy!) and is a shortened version of the British name Andrew. It was almost like their names were meant to be!
Do you have a favorite writing spot?
I’ve moved around a lot since I first started writing, and have lived in a different place during every book I’ve written. So while I haven’t had a constant “spot,” there are certain conditions I like to have while writing. I like to work in the place where I’m living (which has so far been my room in my sorority house, the office in the house I lived in with my best friend during my senior year of college, the living room of my mom’s house, and my current apartment near my school), with absolutely no distractions. That means no music, no TV, etc. I find a focus much better that way! I’ve also found that I prefer writing in the afternoon.
I'm not able to write with distraction either. I think that's why I don't manage writing much at all with small children. But even when writing my blog posts, I have a hard time with music or TV on.
What are 5 books that you constantly recommend?
When recommending books, I consider the taste of the person I’m recommending them to, so my recommendations change a lot! But some of my personal favorites are Harry Potter by JK Rowling, Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, Iron Fey by Julie Kagawa, Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, and Uglies by Scott Westerfeld.
I haven't read Uglies yet, though I do have them, but all the others, totally agree! Well, I'm still reading HP, but I can still recommend them ;)
If you could jump in a time machine and travel to any place in any time period when and where would you go?
I would love to visit Rome during the Golden Age! I went there after I graduated high school, and loved seeing the ruins—I think the history, art, and architecture of Rome is fascinating. It would be incredible to see what the ruins looked like when they were brand new!
I'm with you! I would LOVE to travel back in time to Rome in the Golden Age! I'd be happy to go there right now. So much history! You're so lucky you've been there!
What is the best piece of advice you've ever received?
To keep pushing and don’t give up. The people who make it are the ones who continue to try even after numerous rejections, so it’s important to push forward until you reach your goal.
What can we see from you in the future? Is there anything you can tell us about?
I have two other completed young adult novels—a paranormal and a contemporary—and my agent is currently shopping those around to publishing houses. (I will also be making an announcement about a new project in the beginning of October)

I don't need silence when I'm reading unless the book is a really ba one I have to read for school (coughRomeoandJulietcough). As for writing, I have written in a noisy car on my laptop before, so I'm going to say no, but it does help for there to be a little bit of quietness.

When I am writing, it is crucial that there is no dialogue around me [tv, chatter, lyrics] - I'm okay with music as long as it's instrumental, anything else interferes with my concentration lol
I definitally need total silence! Only one exception though, if im writing a creative story it often helps to have music with no singing in it.

I need silence to read because when everything is quiet, I lose myself in the book. I become the main character. With noise like T.V., music, etc I can't lose myself because I could still feel myself in reality.

I prefer silence, but usually don't read where I can get it. I've developed an ability to tune it all out.

I think it depends on the mood I'm in and book I'm reading. I like to have music on a lot of the times, but never a TV show.
ReplyDeleteI don't really write, except FB, Twitter and little blurbs on Goodreads. hehe
lisaaustin121 at gmail dot com
I prefer to write to upbeat but instrumental music. I need the background noise, but can't have anything that I could sing along to or I'll get beyond distracted!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway!
almostgrownupblog [at] gmail [dot] com
It depends on what I'm doing. Right now all of my writing is for school, so I need silence. If I'm reading something super deep or technical, I have to have silence. But reading for fun, I listen to music.
ReplyDeleteprobablyreading(at)gmail(dot)com
I depends on what I'm writing. If the ideas are there then silence helps me knock it out. If I need help shaping a theme, music can help. TV is just too distracting though.

I can't write in silence- it freaks me out and my ADD triggers, I start jumping at every little sound and get distracted. I pop in my iPod so I can't get hear the outside sounds, but I make sure it's music that I've listened to so much that it becomes just background noise, rather than individual songs.

I almost always have my music on. It helps me concentrate on homework, and its too quiet without it when I'm reading. I have a hard time concentrating on most things (not a good book though ;) and having music helps with that for some reason (weird, because you'd think it would be a distraction, but its not. I think its because I have more things going on and it helps me to not go off on other tangents). I'm listening to the radio right now in fact :D

ReplyDeleteHad to edit. New one:
ReplyDeleteSilence and me don't get along very well. I need some noise when I read or write. Usually it's music, and then that music distracts me or gives me a great idea for a story. See, it's a win win here. If it was silent, it would be okay for a test, but for reading and writing, no. Even if it's people talking about random stuff it's still sound. No, I need music when I read or write. Silence would drive me insane. :D

It highly depends. Sometimes I can read through any noise and you'll have trouble getting my attention. But most of the time, if I can, I prefer to just have the TV down low, that way there's at least something in the background. I sometimes feel awkward reading in complete silence.
ReplyDeleteAs for writing, it depends too, but usually I don't need any silence for that.

thia may sound crazy, but since being a mom first 7 years ago, I have learned to read in loud noises. Music, tv, crying, music, video games ( my husband plays it loud) etc. So, I can't wait to read Rememberance, it seems like a very good book and even if I don't win, I will buy it anyway:)

I can read anywhere with any type of noise. If the book is really interesting I tend to block out what is going on around me, which is annoying to those who try to talk to me.

When I read and write I like to have music and the television on. Please enter me in contest. I would love to read this book. Tore923@aol.com
ReplyDeleteWhen I'm reading I like some noise, but it has to be so quiet I can barely hear it or incredibly boring so I don't want to hear it.
ReplyDeleteWhen I write I have to have the TV on. I usually pick an old TV series off NetFlix and watch while I write. It's usually a series that I don't really have to pay complete attention to in order to follow what it going on, but it gives my brain a break from trying to think of what to say. If I don't do this my writing gets over-though and mechanical.

I can read with the TV on if it's not a show that I'm watching (someone in the family has it on), but if I have the radio on I get distracted and start singing along! I'm not a writer, but when I write reviews I definitely need silence to concentrate. I can't imagine writing a whole book!!

I can read anytime anywhere. I carry my kindle everwhere I go. Maybe since I have a child, you know mom's have a special talent of being able to ignore certain things, like all noise in the imediate area when they choose to. Thanks!! I am really wanting to read this. Artesia at comcast dot net
ReplyDeleteI usually prefer to write in silence. But if it's absolutely not possible, I will listen to Matchbox Twenty, my favorite band. His voice and those lyrics inspire me like no other. I have even written out entire storylines for books based on a certain lyric or entire song. I love how with just instruments and a voice, Matchbox Twenty can inspire this writers emotions and ideas, so easily.

I am a reader who can read through any external stimulus LOL I will get so wrapped up the house could burn down around me and I would not notice (just kidding not quite that bad, although my husband might disagree) I enjoy the quiet, TV, music, or just sitting outside and hearing dogs bark, neighbors kids laughing, and even the woodpecker who reminds me there are bugs in the trees:) Thank you for the fun giveaway opportunity and sharing today.

The beauty of reading a great book:
ReplyDeleteIf I am reading a book for enjoyment (for some reason this doesn't count for my finance books) I can be in the mist of total chaos and still be able to focus. However i prefer having very low instrumental music playing in the background for writing. (its just so relaxing) ^_^

ReplyDeleteNot entering the giveaway, but this is a phenomenal interview! I kinda love how Taylor Swift's music video inspired an entire novel...plus, the book takes place in NH so it has to be good :)
ReplyDeleteA few years ago, I used to always have music on in the background whenever I read or wrote, but something changed and now I prefer silence. However, I do occasionally turn on some really soft music when I read and sometimes I'll even watch TV and read at the same time.
ReplyDeleteklamber1 at unca dot edu

I need TOTAL silence when I read or write! I am too easily distracted :)
ReplyDeletedebra.wischmeyer@gmail.com
I have to have silence to read or write. When I'm reading in bed before I go to sleep, I'm unable to concentrate if my fiance turns the TV on, so I have to put in earplugs. I usually need silence to write, too. But sometimes I can get away with music as long as it is soothing and doesn't have words. My brain can't function with my words and someone else's words simultaneously.
