MFT Guest: Lisa Bergren Guest Posts + a Giveaway!

Today we're lucky enough to have the wonderful Lisa Bergren on for My Favorite Things.  Her River of Time series has quickly become a favorite and I couldn't recommend them any more highly.  You can find my review of Waterfall (book one) HERE, my review of Cascade (book two) HERE and an interview I did with her awhile back HERE.   Lisa did a wonderful guest post for us and there's a giveaway at the end!

Five Things I’d Love About Living in Medieval Times

By Lisa T. Bergren

I’m a modern girl and I love my modern conveniences—computers, Internet, cell phones, hair dryers, stoves, cars, beds, medicine—but there are several things that I think I’d enjoy if I was like my character GabriellaBetarrini, and time-traveled back to medieval Tuscany. Here’s what would top my list:

1)
Rustic, farm-fresh food: Cheese that just came off the shelf where it was aged; meat sliced right from a spit over an open fire; bread just out of a fire-fed oven;olive oil from the grove down the road. The only bummer? Tomatoes didn’t arrive in Italy until later, and no one grows tomatoes like our Italian friends.
2)
Unspoiled countryside: No telephone poles and wires, no traffic, few crowds. Ahhh…Pull up a chair beside me and let’s just stare out at the lush hills and valleys of Tuscana.
3)
Community: In this time period, if people didn’t know and rely on their neighbors like they were kin, they often didn’t survive the year. People needed one another and weren’t afraid to show it—I think we could learn a lot from them in what it means to have true connections.
4)
Chivalry: I don’t know if this is a romantic ideal or truly how it was, but I love the idea of men who know they’re men—leading, pursuing, protecting and cherishing the women in their lives. (I totally value my rights as a modern woman, but there’s just something visceral about this idea of men, right? That’s what I love about Gabi and Lia—they get the chivalrous dudes, but still get to hold to their modern ideals and identity.)
5)
Simplicity of life: I’m sure the medieval mama’s To Do List was quite lengthy, but it largely revolved around just keeping herself and her family alive. When life gets overly complicated for me, I fantasize about having to do nothing but cook, clean and care for my loved ones. Yeah, I know. I’d probably get bored after a week. But on the complicated weeks here in modern times, that sometimes sounds like the ultimate vacation to me. A place and time where I could be solely focused on my relationships and helping to keep us all alive and well.

  1. The sense of chivalry that the men have! Chivalry is totally dead these days. #Sad

  2. Ahhhhhhh I loved this book! I only have an eBook though, so I would love a print copy!

Definitely what Flo said. Chivalry. I mean, Marcello and Luca? Soooo gentlemanly. Also, the simplicity of life. I mean, just because we have technology these days does not mean it's that much easier. I wish people could just take the time to relax more.

  13. That life was more simple than today and the way men treated their loves. It would also be nice to live in a castle, though I'd sorely miss indoor plumbing.

  14. These books are so pretty! :) And they sound great! I'd love to be entered into this one. :)

And I'm going to be honest here- About the only thing I can think of to like about living WAY back then is their pretty dresses. Lovely style. Other than that... I'm pretty sure living back then would suck. :P We glamorize it, a lot, but it was not a fun time to be alive.

I'll keep my shower, flushable toilet and electric lights over your rancid meat, decaying teeth and feces filled streets any day. ;)

  15. Thanks for the giveaway! I love how women dressed back then. I don't know why. But I LOVE how everyone is all about honor. (Ok.. yes, I just watch the season finale of Game of Thrones!) And I love how they talked and called girls my lady. Hehe.

  16. Chivalry, definitely the chivalry. I have been raised on stories of Sir Gawain and Robin Hood and I would love to meet a guy like them. :) Thank you for the giveaway! Lovely post!

  17. I love your list, you hit it on the head. I do agree chivalry would be great. I am a strong independent woman as well, but man, why don't men like exist or if they do they are very sparse? LOL! The unspoiled countryside is the top of my list. No honking horns, no 50 story buildings I will never walk into that block out the sun, just beautiful green grass. Every time I think about it, all I think about is Scotland LOL! Great post and giveaway, really great read :)

  28. -Like mentioned above, I would definitely love the Chivalry. You don't see people that posses chivalry nowadays. Plus, I'd love the community. I wish I had connections with my neighbors like they did back then. I think the world would be a better place if everybody would just get along.

  37. Besides the lovely dresses and jewels I would love the fact that I would probably not have to have a full time job. I could stay at home and tend to the gardens, mending and cooking. Tough work but I still have to do all that plus work in todays day and age.

I would not miss the restrooms or my kindle or the epideral when it cam time to have my girls though!
