MFT Guest: Kim Harrington and Giveaway of Clarity (International!)

Today for My Favorite Things I have Kim Harrington on for an interview and a giveaway of Clarity, which I LOVED!  I found it to be an awesome paranormal mystery with some very fun characters.  I hope you enjoy the interview and stay tuned for the giveaway at the end for a copy of Clarity (open internationally).

If your not familiar with Clarity here’s the description:

When you can see things others can’t, where do you look for the truth?
This paranormal murder mystery will have teens reading on the edge of their seats.
Clarity “Clare” Fern sees things. Things no one else can see. Things like stolen kisses and long-buried secrets. All she has to do is touch a certain object, and the visions come to her. It’s a gift.
And a curse.
When a teenage girl is found murdered, Clare’s ex-boyfriend wants her to help solve the case–but Clare is still furious at the cheating jerk. Then Clare’s brother–who has supernatural gifts of his own–becomes the prime suspect, and Clare can no longer look away. Teaming up with Gabriel, the smoldering son of the new detective, Clare must venture into the depths of fear, revenge, and lust in order to track the killer. But will her sight fail her just when she needs it most?

Now let’s welcome Kim to the blog!

What was your inspiration for Clarity (the story, not the person)?  Did you get an idea and the rest came from that little bit?  Or was it more complete in your head all at once?

The first inspiration was one line (which is now the last line of chapter two). I heard it, said in a snarky sarcastic voice, and wondered why someone would say that. From that grew my main character and her unusual family. After I had the characters fully developed, I worked on the plot points. At each turn, I wondered what was the worst thing that could happen to them, and then I went ahead and did it!

How long have you been writing?  Were you a kid that wrote stories in 2nd grade?  Or did it come to you later in life?

I’ve wanted to be a writer since I could hold a pencil. I wrote stories in grade school. It has always been my dream. It just took a while to come true. A long while. :)

The thing that *really* stands out to me in Clarity is your characters.  You did an unbelievably good job in creating them.  Clarity was more clear to me than most books I’ve read.  Her personality was so strong and it all fit her perfectly.  I guess what I mean is that I just got her because you created her so well.  So my question is, is she based on someone?   Or is anyone in your book based on a real person?

Thank you! None of my characters are based on real people. Though Clare does share a few similarities with me (namely, a fondness for sarcasm). But I do spend a lot of time thinking about the characters and what makes each of them tick. And hopefully that results in them being more “real” on the page.

Oh yes!  They are definitely ‘real’!

Clarity’s family is great and I love that they were all so important to the story.  I LOVE that they all have psychic ‘powers’ but are all different.  If you could have one of the abilities in your book which would you pick?

I’d rather have none because they all come with complications. But if I had to choose, I’d pick Clare’s. Perry’s gift would creep me out. And I would tend to overuse Starla’s gift and listen to people all the time. So, Clare by process of elimination!

Yeah, I think I’d overuse Starla’s gift as well ;)

I think a story from Perry’s POV would be fascinating.  Would you ever consider doing that?

I won’t rule anything out at this point!

You have two more books coming in this series, correct?  Do you have any other projects that your able to share with us?

I have two books coming out in 2012. The first one, in March, is the sequel to CLARITY, called PERCEPTION. But the second one, in the fall of 2012, is actually a standalone. This one’s a ghost story and I’m very excited about it!

So excited for more Clarity, but the ghost story sounds awesome too!

The Liar Society
And last one, what are a few books that you’re always recommending to people?

Definitely THE HUNGER GAMES series by Suzanne Collins. And favorite books from my fellow Elevensies like Myra McEntire’s HOURGLASS and Lisa & Laura Roecker’s THE LIAR SOCIETY.

I’ve read all of them and agree that they are all amazing!

Thanks so much for being on Kim!

  1. Hmmm, I think I would be able to disappear. Then I could curl up in a corner and read all day without being bothered, or sneak into movies, or… I could go on and on and on.

  2. Awesome interview!! I think I would abuse Starla’s power for sure. My hubby would have no peace….lmao.

I definitley agree that the characters in Clarity are incredibly real, such a great book. Thanks for sharing the interview!

  3. I think I would choose the ability to travel through time at will. Just imagine the places and times you could visit and what you would learn!

  4. I’ve actually been thinking about this recently and my answer has changed to something so simple…I would love to be able to fly. I just feel that it would be ultimately freeing even if nothing super cool can come from it.

  8. It’s been said, but I wish I could teleport. If I could teleport, I wouldn’t have to wait months just to be able to see my boyfriend. Sure, the distance is what makes our relationship special, but it’s also what makes it more difficult. If only I could teleport to him every time I want to cuddle or whenever I’m feeling sad.

Thank you for the chance to win!

  9. Thanks so much for the fantastic giveaway! This is on my to read list!

I would definitely want to be able to control the earth… like make vines come out of the ground! I’d become like a crime fighter called Vine Vixen!

  10. Invisibility….because sometimes as a mother of 3 I just want to disappear for a moment and collect myself!!

    cbcowley(AT)gmail(DOT)com

  11. Telekinesis – I’m inheritly lazy and I love the idea of being able to make a cup of tea without moving from the sofa! :)

    notanotherbookblog(at)hotmail(dot)co(dot)uk

  12. I’d like to go all Harry Potter and have some built in dark detectors. It’d be very handy to know when someone bad is nearby, or someone is lying to me.
    Thanks for the giveaway!
    rivkarno1(at)hotmail(dot)com

  13. I’d really much like mind control power!! it’s always been a tie between that or reading people’s mind!:D so there you go!!:D and thx for the giveaway!!

    calbizzz_152(at)hotmail(dot)com

  14. I would love to be able to manipulate people’s reactions and feelings, not in a mind control way, and not changing how they really feel, but in making them more open-minded and understanding so that anger and cruelty won’t come easily.
    World peace, man! lol

    arielle(dot)yeap(at)gmail(dot)com

  15. What a beautiful cover on this book. I would love to have the power of super speed so that I could accomplish all the necessary tasks that have to be done and then have plenty of time to read and do the fun things I like! Thank you for the chance to win the giveaway!

    dz59001[at]gmail[dot]com

  16. So, this may be a little boring/dorky, but I’d love to be able to translate, no matter how ancient, any language in the world.

    b(dot)cardone(at)hotmail(dot)com

  17. That cover is gorgeous, I love it. Great interview guys. The characters in this book sound great. I love a good sarcastic lead, they are usually my favorites LOL! If I had any superpower, I would choose being able to travel through time. I would kiss Ben Franklin and thank him because without him we would have no internet in the first place LOL! Also if I could live like Doctor Who, I would :D Thank you guys so much :)

    drharleyquinn87 (at) gmail (dot) com

  18. I love to travel so that is a no-brainer for me !

    Teleportation.

Imagine, getting to where you want to go in a flash with no airport crowds, crowded economy seats, crying babies or fat men and no security checks. Heaven !

    Thanks for the giveaway.

  19. Thank you for the giveaway, Clarity looks great!

I would love to be a shapeshifter, able to change into anything I want. I could fly as a bird or prowl as a cat and no one would know it was me. :)

    liedermadchen(at)hotmail(dot)com

  20. Great interview and thanks for the giveaway!

If I could have a supernatural power it would be to heal.

    Gabbie-ethela AT hotmail DOT com

  21. That is such a hard question!

Hmmm….(trying to think of my favorite X-Men)

I think it would be cool to have Kitty Pryde’s powers, which is making yourself intangible. Being able to sneak around would be cool!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  22. Whenever I’m asked this question for a contest I always say invisibility because I find it useful but I’m going to pick something more. . .supernatural. I would like the superpower of visiting the Underworld, roam around and see what the dreaded hell looks like. I’ll be petrified of course but I’d get to meet Satan and isn’t that just cool?! lol. Also, I would want to see if it’s the right choice for me because I’d rather rule in hell than serve in heaven. :)

    chicareader(at)gmail.com

  23. I’ve always wanted to be able to walk through walls and objects. When I was little I used to concentrate really hard and then run into doors or walls. Seriously! I thought if I focused hard enough I’d be able to do it. Haha!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

    readingowling(AT)gmail(DOT)com

  24. If I were to chose a superpower, I would choose electricity. The reason is, I wouldn’t have to walk over to a lamp to turn it in and if there was a power outage, there would be no problem. Also, I don’t think people appreciate being zapped.

    ajiehuang1997@gmail.com

  25. If you were to pick a supernatural power what would you pick for yourself?
    hum.. difficult u.u
but probably i will choose time. Freezing time. That would be pretty awesome! Imagine, you can do whatever you want and no one can stop you :)
    thanks for the giveaway!!
    take care!

  26. I STILL need to read this! It’s sounds so great!

I think my supernatural power would either be control the weather…I’ve always thought that image of getting angry and thunder rolling in the distance was awesome! I would also love to transport where ever I wanted! Vacations would be so much more affordable! :)

  27. Oh, that’s soo hard to choose only one! *thinking for an half hour :D*
I think I’d choose reading minds. Sometimes it would be really helpful. Also chronokinesis, controlling of a time, though it can be dangerous,I think. And mainly – biokinesis, using our psychic energy to change/manipulate our DNA (yop, that means changing colors of eyes or hair, become taller, etc.)

    Great giveaway !
    dayenleah [at] gmail [dot] com

  28. Flying would be fun but I think most useful would be good judgement: the ability to make the right choice everytime.

    eva.s.black[@]gmail[.]com

  29. I’ve always wanted to fly. The feeling of freedom, and free falling (hehe I love roller coasters) would be amazing.

    caitlyn_torrens(at)hotmail(dot)com

  30. I would love to read minds this book sounds so good heard alot about would love to read it! Thank you so much for the great giveaway!
    tishajean@ charter.net

  31. I would like to be a shapeshifter. I think running through a forest or flying over a mountain lake would feel like freedom. Plus eternal youth sounds pretty cool too.
    Jennifer k Jovus

  32. The power to time-travel. I would visit all the places real or fictional, from the past to the present from all my favourite novels. Bonus, I’d get to meet all my favourite characters too!!

    Cambonified{at}yahoo{dot}com

  33. Ideally, I would want to be able to touch someone else & obtain their powers. (Kind of like Rouge in X-Men, although in my ideal world, I would get to keep it forever without actually having to kill who I took it from)

However, I realize that this is a slightly cop out power… So, I have always wanted to be able to control the weather. (Although, moving/controlling things with my mind would also be awesome.)

  34. It would be wonderful if I could fly. No need for expensive air tickets that burn holes in your pocket or endless queues at the airport. I would just have to close my eyes and visualize the place.

France, Brazil, Canada, Japan, New York-anywhere I want, when I want it. Sweet!

  35. If I would be given a supernatural power, I’d love to travel anywhere and to go back to the past or future, for short ‘time travel’..;))

    maryanngacayan at yahoo dot com

  36. Telepathy or teleportation have always been the two I’ve wished for. I can think of so many awesome things.

i ten to play healers in games, though, and that would be awesome.

  37. I would have the ability to use other people’s superpowers and store them without their powers being taken away from them. Then, I’d have all of them!

    wordslikesilverblog at gmail dot com

  38. The ability to control time and space, like Hiro Nakamura! That way I get enough sleep, finish EVERYTHING i need to do, and even help people!
