Today I have Aimee from
Coffee Table Reviews on for My Favorite Things. She's going to share her love of fantasy and paranormal with us. Aimee was a friend from before I started blogging, we officially 'met' on shelfari and I was so excited when she started a blog up as well!
Without further ado lets welcome her to the blog!

I started reading Paranormal Romance a few years ago and it refueled my love for reading. It was different

from anything else I had read previously. Books from Jane Austen, Elizabeth Gaskell,Michael Connolly, Dean Koontz, and others were mostly what I read. I started to slowly stop reading. Nothing really captivated me much. I liked Dean Koontz more because his had a slight sci-fi feel to them with a little mystery. Then I read Harry Potter. While mostly fantasty, it lead me into a more mystical genre. What I loved about Harry Potter was the whole secret world of wizards and witches that 'muggles' knew nothing about.

Then I started browsing other books that were outside of my normal genres. Jeaniene Frost, Ilona Andrews, Faith Hunter, Richelle Mead, Charlaine Harris, and Rachel Caine among others. I found myself submerged into a whole new reading experience. Where anything could happen. It didn't have to be logical or rational. The dark side of romance had really helped me find another love for reading. I was enthralled with various vampires. I had started watching True Blood which lead me to the books, in which I had finally given up on the tv show and loved the books. I have never thought I could love vampire books before. But there aren't just vampire books. There are werewolves too, which made me fall in love with alpha men.

While I love romance and prefer it, I also love Urban Fantasy. Which isn't usually focused on a relationship,

while you can find romance in it, they are more centered on the story instead. The mysteries of the paranormal. This is really where I fell in love with the idea that it doesn't have to be logical. When an author can write their own world with their own guidelines, it is fun to learn that world. Learn their myths and creation stories.

While we have tons of different vampire and shifter novels, no one series is like the others. Which, really, would be boring if they were. I love how Patricia Brigg's wolves and

vampires are nothing like Carrie Vaughn's. Each author presents a very unique world, connected only with comment elements of creatures. And what I love even more, is finding a book out there that really catches my attention when they feature a paranormal character I hadn't expected. Like mermaids (Forgive My Fins), mythological beings (The Goddess Test, Darkness Becomes Her) or talents that would classify paranormal (The Body Finder, The Candidates). I love the diversity and I love the genre. If it's paranormal, sign me up!

I read a lot of paranormal books as a teenager, then years passed where I obviously explored other genres (and still do), but now that I started blogging and reading so many different book blogs I rediscovered paranormal and fantasy books - and I'm glad I did!

After school this year, I hit a bit of a reading slump. Once I read The Hunger Games, my reading picked back up.
ReplyDeleteprobablyreading(at)gmail(dot)com
I loved Fantasy because I love how the impossible becomes possible in a fantasy world. In it, I can explore totally new worlds, not limited to our own ...
ReplyDeleteI have always been a ghost, vampire, paranormal kind of reader. I was stuck on Dean Koontz ONLY books for YEARS and then I picked up Twilight. Since then, I have read so many great books and series. I do not have one favorite genre because that would not be fair. I LOVE a lot of genres and will devour them all! Being a book reviewer has really helped open my eyes to the numerous talented authors out there that are going unrecognized! I always prefer some type of supernatural, paranormal twist to a book but does not have always have to be.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win!!!
I was given a copy of A Fist Full of Charms by a student, so I went out and grabbed myself a copy of Dead Witch Walking - - I was hooked! Been reading as much paranormal as I can get my hands on! Thanks for hosting - please enter me.

ReplyDeleteI used to love reading. But after I was done with the last Harry Potter book, I don't know what happened. I suddenly stopped reading and forgot all about fantasy books for years! Then, earlier this year, I found an old copy of City of Bones by Cassandra Clare in my room. I have no idea how it had gotten there, and could not remember when I bought it. It was really strange. Days went, and I couldn't stop thinking about the book. So one day I sat down and started to read it. And that was it. I was in love. A couple of days later I discovered goodreads by luck (it was really random actually). And there I found over a 100 books that sounded interesting. I've got a lot of catching up to do, but it's gonna be fun doing it!
ReplyDeleteI think the reason why I stopped reading after Harry Potter was because I didn't know about any other books to read. The YA selection in norwegian bookstores are SO bad. I'm ashamed. It's like Children - Adult, nothing in between. If you're lucky, you'll find maybe 10 different YA books in a bookstore, and that's at it's maximum. Let me give you an example. Twilight is very well known these days, but before the movie came out, almost none of the bookstores in Norway knew what Twilight was. And now the books are EVERYWHERE! But The Mortal Instruments? Almost no where to be seen. Even though 36-40% of the books they sell are in english, only 5-8% are YA. And 3% is in norwegian. I bet they've never heard about Divergent.
Oh boy... sorry for writing such a long post!

I have been an avid reader all my life. There was a period of time when I did not read for pleasure anymore and I call that time...College. When I graduated I had heard about Twilight and was reluctant to read it seeing as it was YA. Back then YA wasn't too good. However the books I had been reading just weren't cutting it for me so I decided to go ahead and give it a try. I was not disappointed in fact I was massively surprised by the goodness of it all. So I really do Thank God for Twilight because I don't know if I would have been able to get back into reading. Twilight then led me to the City of Bones series which is by far my favorite. I now read nothing but YA and Paranormal Romance. I LOVE READING!!!!
ReplyDeletejen72684(At)hotmail(dot)com
I have always loved the paranormal/fantasy reads.. I like to believe that there are Faries and whatnot roaming the earth with us..
ReplyDeleteI love paranormal romance and urban fantasy, because it allows my imagination to soar. Also, the heroines are, usually, strong and capable and the heroes are equally so.
ReplyDeletemarlenebreakfield(at)yahoo(dot)com
I am a little bit of an escapist and I love to read or watch worlds that allow for the existence of vampires and magic; I would love to live in a world where these things actually exist. I'm not much of a shifter fan but I know that I would have to embrace them as well because it would just be part of the package. All of the book covers above with teh exception of Forgive My Fins are books I have read and loved and I most of them as well. I own the whole HP series, 1-3 of Nighthuntress by Jeaniene Frost and Dead Until Dark. It combines my long time enjoyment of romance and my passion for vampires!

I've always been a reader bt the series that got me back into being an avid reader - the kind that always has a book in her hand was Harry Potter.
ReplyDeleteeva.s.black[@]gmail[.]com
I have always been a big reader. I think the first paranormal I started reading was Sookie Stackhouse books. I fell in love with the first one and went out and picked up the next 4 books. Then I would just wait for the rest to come out. I love paranormal because I is something completely different from normal everyday life. Not the same. It is make believe and it is so fun to read. I love the character from charlaine harris books. The two that got me completely hooked was Laurell K Hamilton and Jeaniene Frost. Cat and Bones are great and Anita Blake & Meredith Gentry are awesome books. If you have not checked out Laurell you should. She had a new book come out tuesday.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway and the chance to win. Would love to win, because quite a few new books have come out lately.

I've always loved reading, because it allows me to travel to places and times that I've never been and takes me away from my daily life. Paranormal/Fantasy/UF is a favorite because I definitely haven't been to those places and/or times, or met any of the fantastical creatures that are within the pages of those books. It's so fun to imagine that some of those things are real, at least while I'm reading the book.
ReplyDeleteBarbed1951 at aol dot com
I also enjoy paranormal. Love Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series that you mentioned. Wonderful!!
ReplyDeletejlkalman26 at gmail dot com
I know what got me back into reading, exactly with Aimme, the Sookie Stackhouse series. I did start reading a long time ago and then just stopped. Don't know why. Then True Blood came along and I was tired of guessing what might happen next, so I breezed through the books and they really got me addicted into the Urban Fantasy (and partially the PNR) world. I fell for the world of it all. Then while browsing for great vampire books, I stumbled on the BDB series by JR Ward and the Highlander series by Karen M. Moning and my love grew from there. No way I am turning back LOL!

I have been an avid reader for many years and have read most genres, usually depending on my mood at the time. I currently love fantasy, historical, paranormal, and urban fantasy the most, although every once in a while love a good cozy or mystery. I first started loving to read after getting a bad grade in reading in the third grade. I was devastated and pulled up my bootstraps and said I will succeed (kind of funny for a third grader to be so determined looking back on it). I found the Boxcar Kids in my school library and was hooked and as they say the rest is historical :) Thank you for the generous giveaway opportunity. I will be hopping over to check out Coffee Table reviews right after this.

I never really read in HS, but in college the TV show lost got me to read a lot of books. Since the writers/producers were dropping a lot of books in to camera shots and we (the audience) were trying to figure out what was going on, the books provided some insight. Some were great reads and added a layer to the show. A few were Watership Down, Turn of the Screw, The Dark Tower series by King.
ReplyDeleteTwilight really opened the world of YA lit to me, and I haven't been able to stop reading YA.

I have always been a reader, but I mainly read realistic fiction. The idea of fantasy was just not something I wanted to read. When Harry Potter first came out I stayed away from it, but I had so many students reading it I figured I should read at least the first one. Half way through that one i went and bought all the books out at that time :) So Harry Potter got me reading fantasy.

To be honest, PN is not my favorite genre... I almost always prefer a contemporary read.
ReplyDeleteBut I do love that you can explore different ideas in Fantasy/PN than you can in Contemp. Also, Fairy Tale retellings are fantasy, which are some of my favorite reads!
Another thing I do like about this genre, is that you can have a truly evil villain. In a lot of Contemp, you expect more dimension and reality from every character, but in Fantasy/PN, while there is depth to the characters, I personally am MUCH more forgiving of wholly evil and wholly good characters in this genre than I am in Contemp. And in certain fantasy stories, I EXPECT and WANT my bad guy to be every kind of bad.

I like fantasy once in awhile because I believe it expands my mind to look at things differently and sparks my imagination. Just like Harry Potter and Twilight!

I love urban fantasy because it takes the real world and the trials of day-to-day living but adds a supernatural flavor to it. So you could still have someone who lost their job from a terrible economy, but then they're able to talk to ghosts and make some cash.

The series that got me back into reading was the His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman.

I never fell out of reading but I remember clearly how I discovered the UF/PNR genres: about 4-5 years ago I read the 1st Blackdagger Brotherhood book, the 1st Riley mnovel yb Keri Arthur and Kelley Armstrong's Bitten, and it was Bitten which got me hooked :-D To this day KA remains one od my favourite UF authors!
