Book Review: Black Magic Sanction by Kim Harrison

Title: Black Magic Sanction (Rachel Morgan/ The Hollows #8)
Author: Kim Harrison

Has spoilers for previous books!

Rachel Morgan has fought and hunted vampires, werewolves, banshees, demons, and other supernatural dangers as both witch and bounty hunter—and lived to tell the tale. But she’s never faced off against her own kind . . . until now.
Denounced and shunned for dealing with demons and black magic, her best hope is life imprisonment—her worst, a forced lobotomy and genetic slavery. Only her enemies are strong enough to help her win her freedom. But trust comes hard when it hinges on the unscrupulous tycoon Trent Kalamack, the demon Algaliarept, and a lowlife ex-boyfriend-turned-thief.

Spoiler free for any of the books in the series, if you haven’t read this series at all, you can read this part!

Rachel Morgan is one of my most favorite characters EVER!  Actually, Jenks, her pixie side kick and back up is on that list as well.  This whole series is a comfort food series for me.  All the characters have really grown on me and I love the way Kim Harrison is able to keep us guessing.   No character is perfect, they each have flaws and you tend to love and hate them all at different times.  This series is full of fun, witty, scary, spooky,  and is downright intense!  I really couldn’t recommend it more highly!

This part may contain spoilers for previous books.

This book was so full of action!  There really wasn’t any down time at all and it seemed like Rachel was rarely ever able to sleep.   However it kept me turning the pages cause it was so intense!   I felt so much emotion in this one.  I felt so bad for Rachel because no matter what she does she just gets pooped on (not literally).  She’ll do anything to save someone elses butt and will even sacrifice herself.  But she sometimes goes a bit too far trying to not use black magic.  She’s so determined to be a white witch that sometimes she really makes things more difficult.  However, in this book she really starts to recognize who she is and begins to accept it.  But she goes through a lot of crap to get there!  I was also so ANGRY because the coven went so far to try to get her but they sat there and accused her of so much crap.  They were total hypocrites!  Also some sad stuff happens in this one too :(  It was a little hard to read that, but thankfully things were okay.  Kind of.   Nick also is in this book and man- I’ll just skip saying anything about him cause it would be too spoilery.  But *SMACK!* that’s what he needs!

It’s a wild ride with Rachel Morgan and her crew and this one certainly wasn’t any exception.  I also started to really like Pierce.  His old timey way of talking is somehow way too sexy.

Like always, I highly recommend this series!

  1. Good review! Yea, Pierce really grew on me too, in this book. Unfortunately, his hang-up against demons makes him unpredictable and sometimes untrustworthy. Rachel needs some predictability in her life.
