Interview with Kate Pearce and #giveaway of Blood of the Rose! Open Internationally

Today we have the lovely author Kate Pearce on to talk about her books from The Tudor Vampire Chronicles.  I recently discovered this series and quickly devoured the first one.  You can check out my review here.
I liked the book so much that I immediately contacted Kate about having her on the blog.  She’s been very fun to chat with.  So I’m excited to share this lovely interview with all of you as well as a giveaway of the second book in the The Tudor Vampire Chronicles,  Blood of the Rose and some soap and perfume she had made up for the books.  The giveaway is open internationally so we have to say a huge thank you to her for the giveaway and especially for making it international!

And as a disclosure for my younger readers, this series is not erotic, but it is a romance and does have sex and adult themes, so it’s definitely for the older readers.

Can you tell us just a bit about yourself and the books you have out before we get started any further?

I’m originally from the UK and grew up just outside London. I went to college in Wales, got married and eventually moved over to California 13 years ago when my husband’s job relocated over here. I have 4 kids, 3 boys and a younger girl. I write for Signet Eclipse, Kensington Aphrodisia and various other publishers. I think Blood of the Rose is my 15th published novel.

When I saw the cover of Kiss of the Rose it drew my eye immediately. I like historical fiction, I like paranormal and I like romance. But really, I think the cover was what sealed the deal for me. Did you have any input in the covers of either of the books in the Tudor Vampire Chronicles?

Yes, I did have some input. Very early on in the process, I was asked for my thoughts and I sent the wonderful art department at Penguin NAL images of the original Tudors and also some more ‘modern’ interpretations from the Showtime The Tudors series. They came up with a series of covers that incorporate both old and new and I was absolutely delighted. The only thing I changed was on the cover for Kiss of the Rose, when I asked it they could put a beard on the hero. :)

And that leads to this, do you ever judge a book by it’s cover? I’ll confess that personally I don’t usually like covers of romances. Be it historical, paranormal, etc. They normally have characters that are hanging all over each other and don’t look at all like the characters in the book look (wrong color hair, etc). But these ones, definitely not the case! I LOVE these covers!

A great cover will make me pick up a book in a store and at least read the back cover to see if I’d enjoy it. Kiss of the Rose recently took 1st place in the JABBIC contest (Judge a book by its cover) so I have to be glad about that cover! LOL

What inspired you to write historical paranormal romance?

I’ve always wanted to write about the Tudors, and when my agent made the suggestion to me about combining the two genres, I jumped at the opportunity.

What has been the biggest challenge when writing your characters?

Sometimes it’s hard when you expect them to do certain things at certain times and they don’t want to, or they go off and do other things and you feel like you are just catching up. I know that sounds weird, but that’s how it feels sometimes. :)

When writing the Tudor Vampire Chronicles what kind of research did you have to do? Did you get to travel back in time and experience Tudor Court first hand? Because if so I’m *really* jealous!

I’m lucky because having grown up in the UK, I’ve actually visited all the places that are in my books-the ones that still exist anyway, so I have a sense of them as I’m writing. Writers also have to thank the Google and the Wikipedia for giving them access to all kinds of information without moving out of their chair. I also love to read research books so I cover all the bases-apart from the time traveling, which would be awesome!

What is one author, or book that you recommend over and over to people?

The Game of Kings (Lymond Chronicles, 1)Probably the Dorothy Dunnett ,Nicolo and Lymond series. They are the best historical novels I have ever read.

If you could have one superpower what would you pick?

The ability to read peoples minds. LOL Especially my teenagers.

If you could be a supernatural creature which would you like to be?

I think I’d like to be a Fae.

Anything you’d like to add?

Well firstly, thanks for having me. :)
And please, check out my website at where I have a list of all my books and a great page of behind the scenes information about the Tudor Vampire Chronicles.

  1. This is a great interview and a FANTASTIC series! I read the first book back in August when I reviewed it for The Season for Romance and absolutely fell in love with this story and its characters. It was such an interesting & refreshing take on a historical/paranormal romance (which you don’t find often). Kate did a phenomenal job in combining the two!

Don’t worry about submitting me for the contest. I already have my copy of BLOOD OF THE ROSE πŸ˜€

PS: I am STILL pining & panting over the guy on the cover. Good lawdy, how hott is he?! He is a PERFECT Christopher Ellis ♥

  2. What an awesome interview and giveaway! The author sounds so awesome and her book’s are simply one of the best! Wooow just take a look at that cover! it’s simply beautifull!
I can not wait to read more of this series as I think it’s going to go far and be amazing!

  3. I love the historical romances and the combination between Tudor and vampires is amazing.

  4. Awesome interview, Candace! I always like reading about the cover design process! Its nice to hear that she had a lot of input! Not all authors do.

  5. Great interview.. I have to admit I judge a book by its cover.. But these books had really great covers πŸ˜€ Makes me wanna pick them up.. Never heard of them though.. Before.. But I definitly need to check them out..
Thanks for making it a international Giveaway :) Please count me in.

  6. This looks like such a great addition to the paranormal rewriting of history that is so popular these days – I just love the idea of Victorian Vampires, I mean, how Victorians are so laced up and straight-spined and Vampires … are not, but this whole rules and … I cannot wait to read this! πŸ˜€
Thanks for the opportunity to win this! :)

  7. Oh, God, thanks for the giveaway! I’m still suprised when I read the name Tudor with the word vampire πŸ˜› When I first read about your books, Kate, I’d just arrived home from school and we’d just learnt about Tudors. I had to reread the review I’d read. LOL. I wonder what a huge imagination you have to have that such a thing – compuond Tudors with vampires – cross your mind. You have all my honor and I envy you for this imagination! :)

    Thanks for the giveaway again,

  8. I haven’t read book #1 yet, but it sounds very interesting :) thanks for a great interview – I really enjoyed reading it!

  9. Thanks for the interview Candace! I found it very fun and informative!

I really love this series and Kate seems so cool. :)

Don’t enter me either! I already have a copy of Blood of the Rose. Good luck to everyone else!

  10. I have heard great things about the first book in the series even though I haven’t picked this one up yet. Thanks for the great interview!

  11. When I first saw these books around the covers caught my attention they are gorgeous then I read the blurbs and knew immediately I wanted to read these books. combining my two favorite genres I’m in my glory.

  12. Thank you for this interview Kate Pearce! Wow, how awesome, a historical paranormal romance! I have to go get the first “The Tudor Vampire Chronicles” now. I love that Kate grew up in the UK so she knows a lot of the places in the books first hand. And I didn’t know there was a JABBIC contest, but congrats. The cover of “Kiss of the Rose” is beautiful.

  13. Thanks for the great giveaway! I have not had the opportunity to read this series yet but they’re on my TBR list. I LOVE THESE COVERS! Count me in!

  14. I am always looking for a new series to read! The story sounds interesting and the cover is great! Thank you for the giveaway chance and the great interview.

  15. I completely agree with Pearce’s answer on being a fae! If I could be a supernatural creative I’d be a fae too, because vampires and werewolves are totally overrated. But regardless, I’d like to win too! (:

  16. I haven’t read any of the series as yet but it sounds like a good twist on the Tudors, so I would like to try it.

I must say that I agree with you that covers are not something I stress about.

I agree with Kate that they can attract a reader to at least read the blurb but there is also a downside in that they can also cause a reader to immediatly skip to another book.

    Thanks for the giveaway.

  19. I always admired how much research and accuracy Kate puts into her novels- her website is full of background info about the time and yes I admit I spent quite some time there.

And yes I have to agree. She really got blessed by the cover goddess. I love the first 2 covers and oh my the cover for books three is great too.

  21. Thanks for the interview and giveaway! I’ve heard a lot about these books, so they’re on my TBR list for sure. Love the combination of paranormal and historical romance :)

  22. “Writers also have to thank the Google and the Wikipedia for giving them access to all kinds of information without moving out of their chair.”

That is a very true statement. I wrote my first full length novel over 35 years ago and research back then meant numerous trips to the library to read reference books that could not even be checked out!

Your series sounds very interesting, and I would love to read it.

  23. I think Kate’s agent made a great suggestion because look how it’s turned out so far!! The books sound great, and I’d love to read them!

  25. Wow, what great covers. They are eye-catching and I would definitely pick them up just from the covers alone. Interesting topic for romances.

  26. This is a very interesting, well thought out interview and an A-M-A-Z-I-N-G series. Its hard now or days to find a interview with questions that weren’t just the usually, you had some that were different.. and I always love something different.

Its nice to hear that she had a lot of input! Not all authors do.
The book does sound wonderful, I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy. I would just look gorgeous on my self.

Thank you for the opportunity of receiving this great book!

    -Lexus ‘Salvatore’

  27. Nice interview.
Once, I read the character guest post. It was so entertaining. I wonder if they are also act that way in the book.

I’d love to read this book at gmail dot com

  28. This was a very intersting review and interview with the author. It certainly is great to see a little bit behind the scenes. I will enjoy reading it and passing it on!

  29. Hi Kate! I agree, it was the beautiful cover of Kiss of the Rose which caught my eye when it was released. I love how it is sexy, historical excitinga nd yet classic at the same time, gorgeous!

If you could combine another time period and supernatural species, what would you choose?

Thank you for the great giveaway!
