Magic is dangerous—but love is more dangerous still.
When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London’s Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos.
Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What’s more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa’s power for his own.
Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by—and torn between—two best friends: Jem, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm’s length…everyone, that is, but Tessa.
As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world…and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

My Thoughts:

I waited for what felt like all year for this book.  I was excited for the steampunk, the historical, the magic, the paranormal… Yeah, pretty much everything this book is about, I love.  And I loved The Mortal Instruments so that kind of pushed the excitement a bit further.  Sometimes when your that excited for a book it lets you down.  Your expectations are too high and really nothing can live up to them.
Well not this book!  It lived up to my expectations and more!
Tessa was amazing.  She was brave despite being thrown into the world of paranormal with no warning.  She took on her gift/curse and dealt with the hand given to her.  Will was mysterious, infuriating, and oh, so very very yummy.  I wanted to smack him a few times, but I still couldn’t help but fall in love with him.  I can’t WAIT for the next book to learn more about him.  Jem was so sweet and so amazing to everyone.   I don’t see how anyone could ever not like him.   Charlotte, Henry and the other Shadow Hunters as well as the characters, were all so well drawn they were easy to picture and know.
I really am so very excited for this series to continue.  I loved it more then The Mortal Instruments and it’s a series I’m sure I’ll be rereading in future.  But for now I just have to wait…. and wait…. and wait… for the next one.
I give this one 5/5 moons, of course!!!
