Description:
Lenah Beaudonte is, in many ways, your average teen: the new girl at Wickham Boarding School, she struggles to fit in enough to survive and stand out enough to catch the eye of the golden-boy lacrosse captain. But Lenah also just happens to be a recovering five-hundred-year-old vampire queen. After centuries of terrorizing Europe, Lenah is able to realize the dream all vampires have -- to be human again. After performing a dangerous ritual to restore her humanity, Lenah entered a century-long hibernation, leaving behind the wicked coven she ruled over and the eternal love who has helped grant her deep-seated wish.
Until, that is, Lenah draws her first natural breath in centuries at Wickham and rediscovers a human life that bears little resemblance to the one she had known. As if suddenly becoming a teenager weren’t stressful enough, each passing hour brings Lenah closer to the moment when her abandoned coven will open the crypt where she should be sleeping and find her gone. As her borrowed days slip by, Lenah resolves to live her newfound life as fully as she can. But, to do so, she must answer ominous questions: Can an ex-vampire survive in an alien time and place? What can Lenah do to protect her new friends from the bloodthirsty menace about to descend upon them? And how is she ever going to pass her biology midterm?
My thoughts:
I have read about teenagers becoming vampires, or wanting to be vampires, but never one who went from being a vampire to being human again. Rebecca completely created a unique story line with strong characters and brought out my own insatiable hunger. For more of her vampires!
This has been said over and over again in reviews but Rebecca brought back the blood thirsty soulless vampires that we all used to love so much.
The book mainly focuses on Lenah after she's human and she's trying to acclimate to being a human teenager. This includes school, being made fun of, learning to drive, dive, modern dance, the whole nine yards. Since Lenah had been in hibernation for 100 years all of it was new to her. It was fun seeing as she learned how to speak and act normal.
When Lenah see's Justin and that whole romantic situation occurred I wasn't quite 'getting' it. Why she liked him of all people. But I guess sometimes that happens? Your attracted to someone just because? Maybe it's the glint in their eye, the way they want to live life to the fullest... I don't know, but it turned out okay, I guess. I just didn't quite feel the whole connection between them.
Even though Rhode wasn't in the story too much I did love him. I have big ideas in my head about what could have happened or is happening with him. If I had my way there would be a love triangle in the future between Rhodes, Justin, and Lenah. And Rhode wouldn't be ummm.... gone.
This story has some flashbacks to Lenah's vampire days and they are certainly bloody and at times horrific, but the author manages to put it together where we can see Lenah is a different person once she becomes human. Although this is a young adult book I think many adults that may not even enjoy YA may enjoy this one because the vampires are soulless, scary and bloodsucking fiends.
I could probably talk a bit more about this book, but really all you need to know is that this book is great and you must pick it up today! It's paperback and it's sold everywhere. Even our Walmart had it.

Brilliant review...though I'm absolutely bored of vampires these days, this might just be a breath of fresh air!
ReplyDeleteI have this book to read. Nice review. I can't wait toread mine.
ReplyDeleteYeah, vampires are getting kind of boring nowadays, I always like to hear a fresh-perspective vampire story!
ReplyDeleteI really loved this book too! I just reviewed it yesterday. I like your idea of a love triangle... hmm....
ReplyDeleteI've already added this book to my wishlist because I thought it sounded interesting. I'm glad to see you liked it.
ReplyDeleteI loved this!! I can't wait to read the next books and now I wish I had that first chapter ;) Great review!
ReplyDeleteThis is one of my favorite books of the year so far, I just adored it. I'm with you on Justin, I'm not sure I love him, but I do like him. Rhode will always be first in my mind though, and I'm hoping he's not gone for good but if he is, I hope we get lots of flashbacks in the sequel because I'm not ready for him to go just yet:)
ReplyDeleteLovely review. ^^ I won this book and am waiting for it to come in.

One of my favorite books. I reviewed it on my blog, Fantasy Fanatic.
ReplyDeleteI read an ARC, but 2 weeks ago I was actually in Wal-Mart and I saw it on the shelf, so I caressed it a bit. And I stood there, in the middle of Wal-Mart, and read the preview for book 2. (And I even recommended it to a random stranger who took it off the shelf to look at:P) One of my favorite books :)
