Mary Finn: country girl, maid to a lord in London
Caden Tucker: liar, scoundrel, and heart's delight
James Nelligan: age six, tossed into a herd of boys
When Mary Finn falls into the arms of handsome Caden Tucker, their frolic changes the course of her life. What possesses her? She's been a girl of common sense until now. Mary's tale alternates with that of young James Nelligan, a new boy in an enormous foundling home.
I'm a fan of historical fiction and I love when a book is told in true voice. That means that this story was told in the voice of those telling it. It started out with Mary as a young girl in the country in the late 1800's. And it was told authentically, with the accent and tone. And when it jumped to James it was the same.
It started out a bit confusing. It says at the beginning of the chapters who's voice it is, but I have a tendency to skip reading the chapter title which wasn't so good. But it also occasionally jumped ahead a period of time so it was a tiny bit hard to follow. That did clear up before the middle of book and things were easier going.
The whole time I was anxious to see how the character would come together and I honestly did not make the connection until the end of the book.
I thought it was great seeing the hardships of the people of the time and I felt anger and frustration at the adults who couldn't, or wouldn't, make things easier on the children. I really wanted to just make life easier for them, but that's just how things were.
The author based some of the story on true events, though it is a fictional story. I can see how it could have really happened though and it was easy to connect with it all, though not always easy to understand. Life was hard though, and the author was able to portray that very well.
I really enjoyed this book and am so glad I had the opportunity to read it. I'm giving it 3/5 moons, but if I could I would jump it up to 3.5.
