Blogging 101 (1)

I’ve been blogging on an everyday regularity for over 5 months now and I feel like I’m starting to really learn the ropes and know what I’m doing.  I have been wanting to let you guys know a bit more about me, my techniques, thoughts, likes and dislikes for awhile now.  I have been asked some questions, and others are questions I thought up.  I would love to have you participate.  You can answer the questions for yourself in the comments or make your own blog post (I would appreciate it if you linked it here, of course).  Take note that I am NOT an expert.  Many of these questions I will have over time I have no good answer to and am really hoping to hear all your thoughts.
For this week my questions are:

How do you handle reading and commenting on others blogs?  How do you find the time and how do you decide which blogs to visit?

I’m still figuring out the best way to do this, but I think I’m starting to come up with a routine.  Every day I visit Pure Imagination, Reading Angel and The Eager Readers.  Usually I do this almost first thing in the morning.  I then visit blogs I subscribe to by email depending on whether they posted something that interests me.  Sometimes it takes me all day to get through those blogs.  (I advise having the sub by email option on your blog, it helps me immensely in selecting which blogs to read.)
I also have blogs bookmarked that I check out.  I usually glance through and look at the book tour sites each day.  There are a few that for a week or more I’ve been visiting on a daily basis.
When I have the time I go to my dashboard, or I glance to my blog list on my sidebar and I see which posts look interesting and go read them.  When I read a post on a blog I haven’t visited in awhile I try to read through several posts and comment on any I’ve read.  I do have kids, so occasionally I get distracted.
On Friday’s I try to do the blog hop and then I’m clicking through the blogs on the linky.  But I visit everyone who visits me.  I try to do that with all of the memes I take part in, and even when people comment on reviews.  If someone visits me and comments I visit them back nearly every time (other then contests).
Sometimes I see people post on twitter or facebook when they’ve done a blog post and I click to check them out as well.
I don’t know how I really ‘find the time’.  I  guess I just spread it out and do what I can, when I can.

How much time do you spend reading blogs each day?

It depends on the day.  I would say on an average day I spend an hour reading blogs.  Friday’s it’s closer to two or three, possibly.

So what about you?  Please share your methods! If you post on your blog please leave me a link in the comments and I’ll check it out!   If you have any questions you would like to be asked, and answered, then please email me at candace_redinger(at)yahoo(dot)com
I plan to post questions each Thursday so I hope you’ll return for more!

Thanks for subscribing!

  1. I check yours and Lori’s a couple times a day. Other than that I use google reader, it’s sooo much easier for me to flip through them.

  2. I usually check through my google reader, for some reason it’s easier for me and I can skim through it and click on the ones that interest me to comment. =D

  3. I use google reader, and then if I see something interesting that I want to comment on I click over to the blog and leave a comment.

I think in total I probably spend an hour or two a day reading blogs.

  4. The best tool I’ve found for keeping track of the blogs I follow is one of the blog readers. I prefer Google Reader myself. I just put all the blogs in there that I follow and it lets me know when there are new posts to the blogs so I can read them at my convenience and most importantly so I don’t miss anything LOL I am also a daily blogger, I generally do a scheduled group of postings on Saturday or Sunday for the week but there are times when I just do it that day. Just trained myself to do it and now it’s habit. I love your blog by the way!

  5. i go through emails first so I can get the ones that commented on my blog then also the ones i subscribe too as well. Which Your one of them ! Then I check out my dashboard for good post!

  6. I use google reader as well, but I find myself not really paying much attention to it for some reason.

    Lots of great answers though!

And Jessilyn, I do see my comments before I look through anyone elses blog. I get email notifications for them and since I have an iPhone I generally know right away when someone comments. I love that! Every single comment makes me smile!

  7. My memory is — hmm lets use the word I just learned from one of the students — craptastic, so I use Google reader and I try to go on it everyday

  8. I use the RSS feeds in my email to keep track of all the blogs I follow. Sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming, but the feeds help.

  9. Great post! I actually have been agonizing over this for the last two weeks! You read my mind!
I finally found a solution on Tuesday. I made a list of all the blogs I really like/read frequently then went to my Google Reader and changed my preference from Show Followed Blogs. So that way I can follow people without them showing up in my Reader. Then I individually added the subscriptions back in. It took a long time but I went from around 200 blogs in my feed to around 100! Now I can comment! I’m also doing the email sub for the blogs I really really like! And I’m going to try to make sure I comment on everyone’s meme’s that comments on mine.

  10. I use google reader and twitter (if someone puts up a link to thier post) I’m finding that following and commenting on other people’s blogs is becoming a job in it’s self!! I try to do it a few times a day when i can or I miss way too many posts.
