Shade Review and Giveaway! *ended*

Description:

Love ties them together.
Death can't tear them apart.
Best. Birthday. Ever. At least, it was supposed to be. With Logan's band playing a critical gig and Aura's plans for an intimate after-party, Aura knows it will be the most memorable night of her boyfriend's life. She never thought it would be his last.
Logan's sudden death leaves Aura devastated. He's gone.
Well, sort of.
Like everyone born after the Shift, Aura can see and hear ghosts. This mysterious ability has always been annoying, and Aura had wanted nothing more than to figure out why the Shift happened so she can undo it. But not with Logan’s violet-hued spirit still hanging around. Because dead Logan is almost as real as ever. Almost.
It doesn't help that Aura’s new friend Zachary is so understanding—and so very alive. His support means more to Aura than she cares to admit.
As Aura's relationships with the dead and the living grow ever complicated, so do her feelings for Logan and Zachary. Each holds a piece of Aura's heart…and clues to the secret of the Shift.

Look for the sequel, SHIFT, coming May 2011!

My Thoughts:

This book was fantastic!  At first I was a little bit unsure.  I mean, it was very different since some could see ghosts and some couldn't.  But that different ended up being good.  I ended up liking that and it turned out to be important and is probably how this is going to turn into a series, I mean it has to go somewhere and discovering how and why the shift happens looks like it might be a big part of the future of this series.

This was not the average book of- boyfriend dies, girlfriend has to learn to let go, and healing happens.  No, that's not even the beginning of it.  This is about friendship, right and wrong and has some reminders for those that may drink and do drugs, you can die!  I mean we all know that if you mix uppers and downers it's not a good mix, right?  No, I don't think everyone knows that.  And apparently Logan didn't.  He simply forgot.  So I liked that it had that message in there.  A gentle reminder is always good.  Not that anyone should be doing drugs, but if you are at least this will remind you.

I enjoyed Aura.  Her personality didn't annoy me as so many YA characters tend to do quite often.  She was real.  She didn't want to let go of Logan but yet she didn't whine about it.  It just was how she felt.  And yet she knew how things needed to go so she worked on bettering herself and finding her way.  I really look forward to watching her grow as a person.

So the love story.  I didn't love Logan, but he was meant to be that way, I think.  He had his faults, that's all.  In this one I wasn't rooting for the dead, at least as far as the relationship aspect went, I was rooting for the living and for Aura to look to the future with super amazingly hot Scot Zachary.  Sigh... Zachary... Talk about one uber hot character!  I mean, what girl doesn't love a Scotsman?  I can tell you this girl loves them!  Unfortunately I felt like we barely got a hint of Zachary so I'm going to go crazy in the next year waiting for him.  To me he's the perfect man, erm, boy.  But Aura has some Logan business to get over, which makes sense, and his ghostly appearances lead to some, erm, uncomfortable situations for the future, you could say.

This is one for the older YA crowd.  Talk of drugs and alcohol takes place quite a lot, though it's mainly negative and works as a reminder of the deadly consequences.  Sex is talked about as well, and although it never quite actually happens, other things do happen. I mean, you can't have sex with a ghost... not exactly anyway.  There is some bad language but I don't recall it being excessive.  Though I've been reading a lot of YA and may be becoming used to it.  I do feel that everything that happened is realistic and what happens for real with YA's.  At least the parts minus the ghosts... (I do believe in ghosts though!)

The ending was satisfying, but not.  It didn't have a complete conclusion but it led us to believe something happened but yet still left open ends.  And really, I don't know if I can wait a year for the next one.  I had a feeling that this may end up on my favorites list, and even with some of the weirdness (like them being able to blackbox ghosts and even summon ghosts to trials) I just really really loved it.  The stuff that seemed a little odd are what helped make this different and what in the end is probably going to make this whole series much more interesting.
This one is easy to rate!  5/5 Moons for sure!

  2. Yes, definitely believe.. never actually had a ghost experience but I did take a ghost tour in New Orleans last year and took lots of pics and the pics had several "orbs" on them. Don't know if they were ghost or not but the guide told us that's what they were. Great review, I heard great things about this book and can't wait to read it!

  3. Yes, I believe in ghosts. I personally have not seen one, but at least three different people have claimed to see an old man in the hallway of my house on separate occasions.

  4. Great review and give-away! I don't really believe in ghosts, but I love reading about them.

  5. I am not sure that I do believe in ghosts, it is a scary thought. To believe that someone's soul is trapped on earth unable to move on, seems like such a terrible thought. I think I would prefer not to believe. Still I have to wonder.

  6. I really believe in ghost I have a vivid imagination and I pretty much believe in anything that's seems reasonable. I believe ghost are around all of us just some sense them better and can even see them. I know of two times when my grandmother walked through are house one morning and she had been dead for a year almost everyone in the house thought they saw her.

  7. I totally believe in ghosts. Never seen one though. Not sure what I would do if I did see one.

  8. I believe in ghosts. I think that some people hang around after they die because they have difficulty letting go.

  9. Yes I do believe in ghosts. I have never really seen anything other than shadows out of the corner of my eye but people often see things in my house. My sister and some of her friends have seen a young girl with long dark hair walking in the hall by my room (at the time they thought it was me because i had long dark hair as well but it turns out I was on the other side of the house) and my mother has had a little boy climb in her bed one night. They have seen the girl several times.

I really want to read this book. Thanks for the giveaway.

  11. I don't believe in ghosts. They're unrealistic and defy all rules of science. However, the concept is facinating.

  16. I do believe in ghosts! My WIP is a story about a ghost who comes back from the dead to save the girl he loves (only to open a gateway for other spirits to enter the world of the living).

  17. I'm a little scared of ghosts (give me a zombie/serial killer scary movie over ghosts & I'll sleep just fine!) so I like to believe they don't exist. : )

PS I'm a follower of Reading Angel & Pure Imagination but it's a radio button, not check box so I could only choose one. Just thought I'd give you a heads up about the form glitch. : )

    Thanks for the giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Not sure if I believe in ghosts or not. I've never had any experience with ghosts but I've heard enough stories to think twice!

    ReplyDelete
  21. No, I don't believe in white sheets floating around and following us. But I have these religious beliefs that sometimes a person will come back in another form, possibly to ask forgiveness from someone...

    ReplyDelete
  22. I do believe in ghosts. And have had a couple of strange experiences that help to reinforce that belief.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don't believe in ghosts and didn't have strange experiences.

  29. I don't think I really believe in ghosts. But when I was little my family lived in this really old house that made all kinds of weird noises at night, and my mom swore that there was a ghost living in the attic.

  30. Yes, I do believe in ghosts. I don't think they are scary like some people. I think as long as you respect them, they'll respect you. I leave offerings to my ancestors.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I believe in them... My friend died when he was 17, and I can still feel his presence sometimes, three years later. Calling me an idiot all the time. Lol. <3

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yes! My mother's old house used to have one and they would always see his shadow on the wall. Just unrested spirits.
&I love to watch Supernatural haha.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Not sure if this counts as a ghost story, but this is the closest thing I've got:

My grandmother always said getting a ladybug in your house was a sign of good luck. Since she passed away, I've seen more ladybugs than I've ever seen in my life. In my house, in my car, I see them crawling around outside, or even landing on me. It's really strange, but every time I see one I know my grandmother is somewhere out there watching me.

  34. I believe that the spirit of a person can remain behind as far as their memory living on, but I don't believe in ghosts.

    ReplyDelete
  35. No, I don't believe in ghosts. But I loved this book. Read it a few weeks ago and stayed up til 2am to finish it. Talk about captivating! And I totally fell for Zach as well. Very hot!

  36. I'm really not sure about ghosts. I think I'm open to the idea, but I can't say I fully believe in them.

  37. Seeing is believing; I haven't seen any ghosts. Yet. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  38. I do believe in ghosts. I unfortunately do not have a ghost story. Of course there are times when I think I hear something creaking in the house when I'm home alone, but it is kind of old, like from the 70s, not super old, so it creaks a lot.

Other times I thought I saw something out of the corner of my eye, but really nothing was there. I have a very powerful and vivid imagination so it is possible that I imagine seeing these things.

But I most definitely believe in ghosts. No doubt about it!

  39. I do believe in ghosts, of a sort. I lost my brother almost 18 years ago & I can still feel his presence sometimes. I catch glimpses of movement out of the corner of my eye or feel someone in the backseat of the car & I know he's with me.

  40. Yes, I do believe in ghosts.

  47. I am reading the WVMP series right now and love it. Can't wait to read these two now after your review!
I don't really have a ghost story other than my paternal grandmothers ghost lives with me. She has since she passed, I know because I feel a gentle breeze at times with a wiff of baby powder and just know it is her. I have nothing that even resembles baby powder in my house! And I definitely believe in them!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I think ghosts Kinda do exist. Some of my friends have shared a few weird Stories with me but I can't remember them accurately.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yes in a way-I beleive ghosts exist in the people a person leaves behind when they die. BEcause it takes that person they loved and who loved them a lot to move on and accept what's happened but even when we die if we are loved we live on in those who loved us :) That's how i see ghosts-

    ReplyDelete
  59. I do believe in ghosts. I think they are all around us, all the time, and we just don't know it. I don't have any stories though.

  65. No, I don't believe in ghosts. I don't have a really convincing reason why, I guess its just cause i havent seen one yet? All the "haunted" camping cabins i've stayed in and "haunted" towns ive been too havent turned out as scary as they were said to be.
